With growing concerns over water usage across the U.S., the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens has re-imagined the large planting bed at the entrance to Lions Park as a Water Wise demonstration garden.
The Mayor's Beautification Award has a category for Water Wise Landscaping, and we wanted to share our new landscape design as an example of an area done with water conservation in mind. Our new landscape had ten separate rotor style sprinklers, which were replaced with a drip system that allows water to be absorbed directly into the soil, eliminating drift and run-off. Large planters are now home to the annual display of flowers grown by the Gardens. These planters elevate and condense the show, thereby allowing staff to create a vibrant display using less labor, and more importantly, less water. At ground level, surrounding the planters, is a collection of native and low water plants. These plants thrive in the harsh conditions associated with most right-of-way plantings, while adding year-long appeal with little to no maintenance.
This demonstration garden was made possible by the generous donations of our sponsors: Friends of the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens; Scotch Boy, Inc.; Fort Collins Wholesale Nursery; Harold F. Johnson Masonry; Riverbend Nursery and the Cheyenne Board of Public Utilities
