EcoFest is this Saturday. Recycling drop-offs, e-bike demos, solar consultations, native seeds to take home.

We’ll be there to talk through the questions people don’t usually get to ask:

Is my yard even big enough for this?
Do native plants actually survive Chicago winters?
Where do I even start?

Come find us. We’ll figure it out.

Native plant tip nobody asked for:

Virginia Bluebells bloom in April & May then completely disappear underground for the rest of the year. They show up, do their job, & leave. Honestly the most professional plant in the garden.

That strip of ground between your sidewalk & the street? You’re responsible for maintaining it, & most people just leave grass there because that’s what was already there.

At EcoFest we’re talking parkway design. What actually works in Chicago, what survives winters, what needs basically nothing from you once it’s established.

Prairie smoke is pollinated using buzz pollination. Bees will vibrate their bodies against the petals in search of nectar & causes the pollen to be shaken out. Blooms before most plants have woken up and leaves behind seed heads that look like something from a different planet. Every single person who sees it asks what it is. That’s a good plant. Your lawn has never made anyone curious.

Your lawn has been giving you signs. You’ve just been politely ignoring them.

If any of these hit then May is the right time to start. Native plantings go in now, establish through summer, and show up fully next spring.

Native plant tip nobody asked for:

Golden Alexanders blooms in May before almost anything else in Chicago, which means it’s feeding pollinators when nothing else is open yet. Your lawn in May is just wet and asking to be mowed.

Seriously though, add some native plants to your gardens & get rid of your lawns.
