It pains me to say that several days ago i lost a great friend, assistant and family member. Sean Griffin has been such an important part of what i do here at the shop since the beginning. We built out the shop together, brought tools in and took furniture pieces out for over two years and had a couple delicious lunches along the way.
I think from 2009-12 i spent more time with Sean than even my wife. When we brought home Kevin the dog, Sean was here to greet him... When we got a new cat, Sean was here... when we had a daughter, there was a bottle of champagne waiting for us in the fridge. He was a benign presence who was always happy to help out with anything.
It was a pleasure teaching him, watching him grow as a woodworker and as a person and learning from him as well. At the beginning, to tell the truth, I wasn't really a great boss, and he wasn't a particularly great assistant. But as we worked together, we fell into a rhythm and worked on a lot of great projects together, both of us getting better daily. I found he had a thirst for knowledge and a determination to get things right and an attention to detail that at times was even better than mine. Most of all Sean seemed excited about waking up and learning new things every day. Having a place where he could come, work and be creative within a structure and time constraints was very comforting for him. I think we both found that the work suited him well and it was great having him around during such a pivotal time in my life.
I'm proud to have shared so much time with Sean and I'm lucky to be surrounded by so many remembrances of him. There are so many things he helped build in the shop and in my home, it will bring a smile to my face for years to come.
rest easy Sean,
Chris
