Indianapolis is having a moment — and Skender VP Jamie Nieves was at the table to talk about it.

Jamie joined fellow industry leaders at the recent Bisnow Indianapolis Commercial Real Estate: State of the Market panel, representing Skender on topics ranging from construction costs and capital markets to the projects redefining the city's skyline.

On what makes Indianapolis so exciting right now: there is no shortage of transformational projects defining the next chapter of Indy — the Convention Center expansion, Traction Yards replacing Circle Centre Mall, the Indiana Fever training facility, the Ritz-Carlton, and a new Live Nation music venue, to name a few. And then there's the IU Health Campus, where Skender is proud to be doing our part to bring that vision to life.

Looking ahead, Jamie's prediction: the Pacers and Fever campus becoming the most exciting block in Indiana. With the area around Gainbridge Fieldhouse transforming into a year-round entertainment district, the momentum is already there.

Thank you to Bisnow and fellow panelists – Vincent Ash, Lance Evinger and John D’Angelo – for a great conversation

At Bisnow’s recent Chicago Office Leasing, Acquisition and Development Summit, Skender Project Executive Tony Scott discussed RTO trends and the future of Chicago’s office development with moderator Debby Hill of Key Interiors and fellow panelists Alex Najem of Fulton Street Companies, Karoline Eigel of Cushman & Wakefield and Matt Pistorio of Madison Rose Leasing Co. and R2 Companies.

While the pandemic changed the face of the workplace for several years, Chicago companies are finally starting to get back to business in person, and many companies are investing in upgraded workspaces. An influx of office workers has already started to breathe new life into downtown office corridors, which are seeing the return of ground floor retail, food and beverage options.

Tony spoke about Skender’s uptick in tenant interiors and boutique office projects and how we manage to keep projects on track despite an array of challenges ranging from inflation and materials pricing to changing design and standards.

“It has been very unpredictable, especially regarding materials sourcing and economic uncertainty. As inflation goes up, so do construction costs. There are a lot less cookie cutter spaces being built right now, but construction timelines haven’t changed. I think the biggest indicator of success is making sure to get planning done 100% on the front end. This ensures that construction timelines are for building the project and not for making decisions that should have been made already. Hire a contractor earlier than you think you need it.”

In healthcare construction, assumptions are expensive.

Outdated drawings. Hidden conditions above ceilings. Limited shutdown windows. When something unexpected surfaces mid-project in an active hospital, the cost isn't just a change order — it's disrupted patient care.

Laser scanning changes that. Scope defined by verified conditions beats scope built on assumptions. Every time.

Skender’s Senior Virtual Design & Construction Manager Owen Huisenga wrote about how VDC technology is helping healthcare teams find the risk before it finds them — including a CT project where a six-week schedule became four.

More affordable housing is on its way to Evanston! Our team, alongside our partners at Housing Opportunity Development Corporation, broke ground on Mt. Pisgah Apartments, a new mixed-use affordable housing development that will bring 33 much-needed affordable homes.

This development will transform the current church site at 1813 Church Street into a vibrant mixed-use community with affordable homes and neighborhood-serving commercial space. The development is designed to help ensure that working families, seniors and essential workers can continue living near jobs, schools, transportation and community resources in Evanston.

Thank you to HODC, Mt. Pisgah Ministries, and the City of Evanston for your dedication to bringing this project to life!

Making our mark at Keystone Crossing office park!

Our team in Indianapolis recently completed four tenant buildouts totaling 57,000-square-feet for WestPoint Financial Group (a MassMutual Firm), Indiana Apartment Association, Delta Tau Delta, and CliftonLarsonAllen. Along with those, our team completed common area enhancements on behalf of landlords Interamar and Typerion Holdings.

This transformation reflects Skender’s expertise in helping real estate owners and tenants turn thoughtful design into high-performance workplaces.

With partners, clients, and community members by our side, our team officially topped out construction on the brand new Westfield Police Department headquarters!

The 50,000-square-foot development near Grand Park in Westfield, Indiana, will support a modern police force and current staffing needs while allowing for long-term expansion of up to 80,000 square feet, including a planned 30,000-square-foot addition over the next 15 to 20 years.

Our Indiana team is proud to continue partnering with the City of Westfield and is beyond grateful for the work our trade partners put in every day to keep the project on track for completion in 2027.
