Clad in a flashed, tumbled modular brick (Ivy League” by Summit Brick Company) the exterior blends a rich red body with subtle purple undertones. Paired with matching red mortar and sills, the design draws out deep, moody flashes in the sunlight.

Masonry glazes are evolving, and the recent office renovation by Michael Abraham Architecture is a testament to this shift.

The design journey began with a long-format facade sketch from Jason and Michael at MAA. While reviewing S.Anselmo Corso samples, one specific glazed finish sparked a new question: what else can we do with glazes?

To create a more dynamic wall, we blended multiple glazes on the S.Anselmo LONM Terra Dragwire—an extruded, long-format brick. Starting with a uniform black engobe slurry, we sampled two additional finishes to introduce depth:

- A heavy clear glaze
- A double-fired glaze

The result is a striking, high-variation facade that redefines the modern brick aesthetic.

Designed by Canopy Architects, Chicago’s first Native American affordable housing development is located at 2907 W Irving Park Rd. The seven-story structure, named Jigzibik (meaning “at the river’s edge”), features a unique sawtooth shape with sharp angles.

The building’s street-facing facade will showcase a 60/40 blend of Interstate’s Sawgrass and Almond colors, complemented by S. Anselmo’s green/blue glazed brick. This glazed brick is laid to resemble the branches of the Chicago River, reflecting the project’s namesake. To accommodate the sharp angles surrounding the balconies, special 70° and 110° bricks were produced by both Interstate and S.Anselmo.

Stay tuned for an in-depth case study on the masonry for this project.

A few weeks ago, we hosted our annual “Craftworker for a Day” workshop in collaboration with International Masonry Institute (IMI) and Brick of Chicago. Architects from across the city joined us to dive into the technical details of masonry design, listen to peer case studies, and get their hands dirty with some bricklaying!

Highlights from this year’s event:

- Peer Presentations: Special guests from Design Bridge and Gensler shared insights from their personal masonry projects.
- Literary Corner: Our friend Will Quam, from Brick of Chicago hosted a reading and book signing for his recent publication, “Clay and Fire”.
- Tech in Construction: IMI demonstrated how augmented reality is being used to assist in custom masonry construction.

It was an incredible day of learning and building together. Don’t miss out on the action next year!
