We have a materials theme brewing. This month, we asked everyone to submit their best WOOD images. The office delivered a beautiful selection of forestry, textured walls, and ceilings. But the winner was an image that defied scale and shape. Cole’s winning image shows an Edgewater art exhibition of an unknown artist’s work, displaying wooden paint sticks and dowels in a series of spiral clusters. There’s almost a liquid quality to the image that made it the winner among an impressive crop. //

The momentum continues to grow in Sarasota. Our client Torburn Partners’ vision for a lifestyle center befitting of its surrounding community shows progress every day. The Sarasota Square redevelopment is 88% pre-leased and is much more than a mall remade. It will redefine the retail and hospitality experience for the area. //

Time to introduce our 2026 summer interns! This year we’re excited to have Vera (left) and Robert (right), two bright and energetic minds, joining the team to lend their talents on a host of projects. Vera joins us after his third year at Cornell and Robert is pursuing his Masters at U of I. Between them, they have traveled the world, calling such places as Turkey, Venezuela, and South Africa home. This exposure has given them a well-rounded and expansive perspective on how architecture shapes the global environment. Welcome to OKW! // 📸:

A big thank you to for the early access tour of the upcoming Obama Presidential Center in Jackson Park. A group of OKWers visited the civic center and came back inspired by the power of architecture. Among the words they used were “dense, pensive, powerful,” and “sculptural.” They commented on the thoughtfulness of the individual exhibits and the careful attention paid to the visitor experience. We are lucky to live in a city with such a deep bench of architecturally significant projects. Thanks to this center, the list has grown! //

On his way to the Mart, Anders was crossing the Chicago River on Orleans and looked east to our picture perfect city. With a hazy sun casting a warm glow on the green hues below, he had to take a quick snapshot. This photo was one of many taken during our annual Get Moving challenge, where we encourage everyone to enjoy the outdoors with walks to such places as Wolf Point. We voted on our favorite shots and civic pride pushed this one to the top. //

This is Allegro, a short-term condo project in Nashville’s Pie Town neighborhood. Our client asked us to plan this development, which is already an unusual typology, on a site with a 17-foot grade change. Our talented team got together and brought out the best in each other to deliver a thoughtful concept inspired by Nashville’s famous music scene. See the gilded fins? The patterned brickwork? If you haven’t visited our office in a while, you will notice a few changes. New seating, an improved layout, new work settings, and a color palette that more closely reflects who OKW is in 2026. Our theme for our monthly photography contest was RESTORATION — a fitting theme for a firm dedicated to improving the built environment through architecture. The winner was this colorful framing of an interior that has seen better days in San Juan, Puerto Rico. But the remnants of colors, the exposed arched brick, and the playful shadows made this photo compelling precisely because of its imperfections. As designers, it’s an image that screams potential. //
