Why does the same product feel more expensive in one store than another?

Often, it's not the product, but the space around it.

Research on the space-to-product ratio proves that when more space is devoted to individual products, shoppers often perceive those products as more aesthetically appealing and valuable, and the store itself as more prestigious.

But this isn't about using fewer fixtures or displays. It's about designing fixtures that create that space intentionally, using height, depth, and negative space as part of the presentation itself.

Let this be your reminder that sometimes a little breathing room can make a product feel like the main character.

SEPHORA's latest retail space comes with a swimsuit dress code.

This summer, Sephora is taking beauty beyond the store with its first-ever Summer Club - an interactive poolside pop-up running through September 7 at The William Vale in Brooklyn and Isla Bella Beach Resort in the Florida Keys.

Guests can borrow tools from a Beauty Library, discover complimentary suncare at curated SPF stations, and shop summer essentials from a dedicated Sephora Kiosk, all while spending the day poolside, lounging under the sun.

At The William Vale, the experience taps into the social energy of a Brooklyn summer - lively, expressive, and communal. In the Florida Keys, Isla Bella shifts the mood toward a slower, oceanfront escape centered around restoration and relaxation.

Same brand. Same concept. Two environments shaped around how people actually inhabit the space.

It’s a reminder that when nearly anything can be purchased from a screen, physical retail has a different job to do. It needs to create reasons to discover, linger, participate, and connect.

What if retail met people where they already wanted to be? For designers, that opens up a much bigger conversation about what a “store” can actually become.

Retail’s newest salesperson doesn’t say a word.

Kiehl's is bringing interactive mirrors into stores across the UK, UAE, Singapore, Malaysia and China. Powered by motion sensing and augmented reality, the installations turn an everyday glance at your reflection into an invitation to interact with the brand.

These ‘Smart Mirrors’ are being introduced as permanent store features, signaling a long-term role for responsive technology in physical retail.

The environment recognizes a shopper’s presence and changes because they are there, transforming a display from something people passively see into something they can experience.

Because the future of retail may be about creating spaces that respond more thoughtfully to the people inside them.

This isn’t Kendra Scott’s first rodeo, but it may be her most immersive one yet.

‘Yellow Rose,’ the concept store by Kendra Scott has landed in Nashville’s 12 South neighborhood, bringing a distinctly Western point of view along for the ride.

Inside, barn wood, antique finds, personal mementos, and layered ranch-inspired details create a space that feels like a South-west universe. Guests can browse apparel and vintage goodies, customize hats, boots, and jewelry, and then settle in at Beau’s Bar for a Texas-inspired cocktail.

Part boutique, part bar, and part gathering place, this immersive concept leaves a lasting brand impression while inviting customers to explore and connect.

What if “unfinished” was actually the finishing touch?

Minnibar makes a compelling case for doing less, but doing it thoughtfully.

Rather than disguising the concrete bones of this newly-opened downtown Montreal location, Ivy Studio made them part of the atmosphere. Wood finishes, soft yellow chairs and paper-like lighting bring warmth to the harder surfaces, creating a space that feels both pared back and inviting.

The layout follows the rhythm of the restaurant. Coffee in the morning, pizza and pasta later on, then music as evening settles in. The kitchen, bar and pizza-making area form the social center, while a sculptural DJ booth hints that the space is ready to transform when the sun goes down.

The result is a space that boasts confidence without feeling overdesigned. A reminder that memorable spaces aren’t always built by adding more.

Sometimes, they begin by noticing what’s already there.

Welcome to the boutique renaissance.

Social media may have done boutiques the biggest favor.

Think about how we shop online. Algorithms are designed to show us more of what we've already liked, searched for, or clicked on. They're incredibly good at keeping us in our comfort zone.

Boutiques do the exact opposite.

The best ones introduce you to something you never would've searched for in the first place. It reminds us that great stores don't just help people buy what they came for. They help them discover what they didn't know they were looking for.

That's the kind of retail experience people remember long after they've left the store. When every design choice is intentional, curiosity becomes part of the customer journey.

Retail fixtures have entered their quiet luxury era.

In retail, it's easy to assume that making a bigger impression means adding more. Paloma Wool first Los Angeles store on Melrose challenges this approach.

With clean-lined steel fixtures, sculptural furnishings, and plenty of open space, every element has room to breathe. Nothing feels overcrowded or overstated.

Instead, the fixtures guide the experience, drawing attention to the products without competing for attention.

Sometimes the boldest statement isn't adding more. It's knowing exactly what to leave out.

Some of the most important design decisions in a store are the ones shoppers never consciously notice.

Most people assume they choose what to look at. In reality, the environment is constantly making suggestions before a product ever lands in a shopping cart.

Thoughtful retail design isn’t just about making a space look beautiful. It’s about understanding human behavior.

Where do people naturally pause? What catches their attention first? When do they feel curious enough to explore instead of walking by?

When those questions guide the layout, every display, fixture, and shelf starts working harder.

The strongest brand stories don't always begin with a logo. Sometimes they begin with the building itself.

Dior's newest flagship in Osaka, Japan, designed by architect Sou Fujimoto, shows how a storefront can do more than just house a retail experience. Inspired by the softness and movement associated with the fashion house, the building gives visitors a sense of the brand before they ever step inside.

This is part of a broader shift happening across retail. The physical store is becoming one of a brand's most powerful ways to communicate identity. Materials, form, and architectural details all play a part in creating an experience that feels unmistakably connected to the brand.

If a building can make someone stop in their tracks, it's already done part of its job.

Consider this your shortcut through the retail industry noise.

Consumers are spending more, but with way more scrutiny. They're comparing prices with AI before they buy, discovering products on social feeds instead of storefronts, and choosing malls that feel like a destination.
