Wish every day could be a drawing day!

One of our favorite stages of a project is hand drawing initial concepts - stepping away from technology to think through ideas, proportions, and how a landscape is experienced.

Through this process, we provide our clients with an extensive site study consisting of three or more concepts. Presenting multiple approaches allows for a collaboration with the client to compare and refine the design together.

Side yards—often forgotten or left to utility areas—provide such great opportunities.

When designed with intention, these narrow spaces transform, celebrating planting design while connecting the entire property experience.

Our final post in the Howard Van Doren Shaw series—focused on planting design, always our favorite part of the process.

Still a young garden, but the framework is there. A small arboretum within the city, celebrating plant diversity with over 80 species—layered for texture, depth, and a sequence of garden rooms beginning to take shape.

Our team is fully hands-on, laying out each plant on site alongside the contractor to fine-tune placement and composition.

Looking forward to spring, when the garden begins to reveal its full character.

Today we’re featuring the amphitheater at our Howard Van Doren Shaw project. During the concept phase, one of the key challenges was how to better connect the main house to the pool garden. Originally, access was limited to a single entry from the formal main level.

Our solution introduced a new connection from the lower level, in the form of an amphitheater. Beyond improving circulation, it became a playful space where kids can perform, climb, and gather — adding another layer of dimension to the garden.

Continuing our highlight of the Howard Van Doren Shaw project, today we feature the pool garden.

Designed for this city property, the 18’ × 45’ pool is anchored by a restored coach house and framed by a brick wall, pergola for outdoor dining, and privacy plantings. The pool garden was intentionally contained to preserve the tranquility of the surrounding gardens.

Approaching from the front, a 100’ long crabapple allée terminates at the pool and spa, where an Indiana limestone weir and spill basin creates a focal point at the end of the corridor.

Today we’re featuring the entrance at our Howard Van Doren Shaw project. The intention was to create an entry that feels timeless—difficult to decipher whether it was installed today or a century ago. Limestone columns echo the home’s pilasters, hand-forged wrought iron gates introduce simple elegance, and reclaimed Minnesota granite street cobbles ground the space with a sense of history.
