Next thing to talk about is going to be the extreme cold. I hate to say this but this will be comparable to 2014 by the time this is all said and done.
Maybe colder. There are some very concerning signals that we reach some very cold lows this week. It’s every night as well. Below 0° will start tomorrow night and persist through late week into the weekend. Some night could get colder than -10° real temps. With wind chills reaching instant frost bite levels. I do expect numerous people to experience pipe bursting this week. Damages to pipes and water lines will likey reach millions of dollars range in Ohio by end of week. Yes, even for Chillicothe/Waverly/Portsmouth.

We are looking at a near historic cold blast this week.
The Scioto and Ohio River will likely be 1 solid sheet of ice by the end of the week. Let’s hope for a sudden warm trend on models.
Temps at the end of the week could struggle to reach 5° for a daytime high.

A big conversation happening right now in Ohio is the housing shortage. One major reason we don’t talk about enough? Septic regulations!

Right now, Ohio has a patchwork system, 88 counties doing 88 different things. That means whether you can build a house often depends less on common sense and more on which side of a county line you’re on. People are ready to build, but they can’t even get a septic approved. That’s not a housing shortage, that’s red tape.

There’s a lot of “crappy” regulation out there, unnecessary inspections, duplicative permits, arbitrary design rules, and local requirements that go far beyond what’s needed to protect public health. All of it adds cost, time, and frustration, especially in rural Ohio where septic systems aren’t optional, they’re the only option.

That’s why I introduced HB 640.

HB 640 cuts through the bull. It brings consistency across the state, limits overreach, removes unnecessary inspections and paperwork, protects property owners’ rights, and makes it easier to repair or replace existing systems without starting from scratch. Most importantly, it keeps public health protections in place while making sure common-sense housing projects don’t die in a stack of forms.

If we’re serious about fixing the housing shortage, we have to stop pretending that overregulation isn’t part of the problem. You can’t build homes if you can’t install a septic.
