So excited to be the newest addition to Oklahoma's agritourism program! We are so proud to be able to represent Oklahoma as it moves forward toward a more regenerative and sustainable future in agriculture. This program will allow us to be part of seasonal tours and events sponsored by the tourism department and will include guided tours of the farm and its permaculture roots. There will also be a focus on market farming using regenerative agriculture. Additional events will be added as the season develops but so far its pretty darn exciting!! As soon as our profile page goes live I will send out the link.
A big thank you goes out to all our wonderful friends and family that have inspired us to keep after our dream alive...we couldn't have done this without you!

Huffman Family Farms is proud to announce that our expansion project at the farm is finally complete! We have used the last few months to expand our growing area as well as create new opportunities for future “hands on” classes. The farm now includes 3 new high tunnels that will extend our growing season and help protect our plants from the crazy Oklahoma weather. We have also created a vermiposting/composting area, a Black Solider Fly larva (BSFL) harvesting area, and a large regenerative flower garden with passive water reclamation. We also tossed in a new “composting” hand washing station! We also planted the first large Persimmons that will be the anchor trees for the permaculture “guild” garden. The finishing touch was the installation of several seating areas and a fire pit! These areas will allow us to offer more classes on regenerative/sustainable gardening techniques and permaculture principles by giving you an opportunity to see the results for yourself.

So, while it seems like it has taken FOREVER to finish this project you can see there were lots of parts to the puzzle. The next step will be to get all the remaining plants into their new homes and get them settled in. We will start the process of opening the fields in the South garden this next week so the remaining 500 tomato and pepper plants will be in the ground soon! The plants are ready and so are we so look for us at the Choctaw Creek Farmers Market the first part of May!

Lucinda is ready to plant so we've got to get busy! High tunnel #1 is about ready for covering. We should be starting tunnel #2 later this week and the third tunnel will go in right after that. All the veggies are safe inside the germination room but very eager to get in the ground!

Got my first load of hay bales and I'm already putting them to good use! Thank you Stephanie Pate Carel for donating your left over hay bales for use at the farm. I am starting several compost piles using my worm bomb technique (which I will show in detail in the next few days) and have also used the straw for winter covering for my garden rows. The use of the hay will help add beneficial bacteria to my soil as well as organic matter. I left my hardy herbs in ground so I would have plenty of living roots to fuel the bacteria for better composting action. Slow, steady improvements reap solid, long-term results!

No pristine wilderness, Europe was a place of handcrafted nut orchards and semi-wild forest gardens carefully managed for thousands of years.

Getting the area ready for classes! We are hopeful that by next spring we will be conducting classes on a regular basis but for now we are just getting a few things ready. We would like to have at least one class this fall on the basics of sustaiinabliity and regeneration with a focus on permaculture principles. Stay tuned for more info!

A quick update on the Henny Penny 2000 Black soldier fly larva bio-reactor! Were producing a pound of larva in each box every week. This produces ample yummies for our chickens every few days. The fresh eggs from the chickens are super nutrient dense with the added protein and calcium. All this from just the food scraps from our family! The added bonus is the liquid fertilizer I harvest from the tubs as the larva digest the organic matter. This liquid is wonderful food for my earthworms and I add it to my compost pile to give them some added nutrients as well.

Say hello to the "Henny Penny 2000" my black soldier fly larva bio-reactor! I have been using BSFL to turn our kitchen scraps into delicious, protein and calcium packed treats for our chickens! This system will use the grubs desire to seek soil for pupation to self harvest them for my little chickie friends. It also collects the liquid from the process which is a wonderful soil additive that earthworms love. Black soldier fly larva reduce kitchen scraps faster and more throughly than earthworms and have the added bonus of repelling houseflys in the compost at the same time. The femail BSF started showing up even before I had all the tops back on!

So excited to see these little guys in the compost! Black Soldier Fly larva are great for breaking down the organic matter in your compost pile. They look scary but they do not bother your earthworms and in fact actually help break stuff down so it is easier for the earthworms to eat. They are also a great source of protein and other good stuff for your chickens. They also help to reduce the house fly problem by creating a poor environment for them to lay their eggs. I call this a Win, Win, Win, Win solution!
