Over 70 feet long and reaching nearly 7 feet tall, this Allan Block retaining wall wasn’t just built to look good — it was engineered and constructed for long-term performance.

At these heights, what you can’t see matters just as much as what you can. Proper excavation, base preparation, drainage, reinforcement, backfill, compaction, and engineering all play a role in making sure this wall stays exactly where we put it.

Finished in Allan Block Hickory Blend, with a sweeping radius that completely transformed this hillside.

Polymeric sand isn’t just “sweep it in and spray it with water.” 👀

There’s a right way to install pavers — from what’s underneath them all the way to the final joint sand.

One of the biggest mistakes we see is polymeric sand being swept into the joints, lightly watered, and called finished.

WOULD YOU SHOW UP TO AN ESTIMATE IN A Z06? 🏎️💨

I do show up to customers’ houses in the Z06 sometimes…

But NEVER for the initial estimate.

First impressions matter.

If I’m asking someone to trust me with a $20,000, $50,000, or $100,000+ project, pulling up for the first meeting in a flashy sports car is just stupid business.

After we’ve built a relationship? They know me, they know my company, they know about the car, and we’ve already established trust?

Absolutely. 😂

There’s nothing wrong with enjoying what you’ve worked for.

LET’S TALK PAVERS!

The most important part of a paver patio is the part you’ll never see when it’s finished — the base.

You can use the nicest pavers on the market, but if the base underneath them isn’t excavated, built, and compacted correctly, that patio can eventually settle, shift, sink, and become uneven.

Unfortunately, the base is also one of the easiest places for contractors to cut corners. Once the pavers go down, you can’t see what’s underneath them.

At The Retaining Wall Company, we believe the work underground matters just as much as the finished product you see on top.

PART 3: THE FINAL TRANSFORMATION.

With the wall built and the hillside secured, it was time to finish what we started.

This project tested us. Shifting sand that wouldn't stay put. Trees that had to come out before we could even shape the slope. Engineering challenges that meant slowing down instead of rushing through. We brought in engineers to make sure every decision was right, and we didn't cut a single corner — even when it would've been faster.

This is the part people don't see in the "before and after" photos. It's not just moving dirt and stacking block, it's problem-solving in real time on a hillside that fought us every step of the way.

The result: a completely reshaped hillside, finished with a privacy fence and paver patio that turned an unusable slope into one of the best parts of this property.

Because rushing a wall in bad conditions doesn't save time - it costs you more in the long run. A wall built on saturated ground today is a wall you're repairing next year.
