This garden I designed and planted in 2025 has virtually no weeds. These 3 things helped:
1. Room for root balls was dug with 3" auger- no tilling.
2. Plants were sited densely, including generous numbers of Carex brevior and other graminoids. Also, the use of these and other plants in the design initiates a self-sustaining process for improving soil structure with the roots.
3.Plants were watered properly.

One of my jobs planted in fall 2024. In front is spent Allium 'Ambassador' showing that brown is a color too, and can really pop in the summer garden. Also, Liatris and Silphium terebinthinaceum. In background right are strawberry (Fragaria virginiana) used as a groundcover, with Arrowwood viburnum (Viburnum dentatum) shrub.
