Long overdue. If we are to retain out domestic hardwood lumber manufacturing base..China needs to be purchasing our lumber not just our raw logs.

A 30 June letter to USTR Jamieson Greer wants hardwood lumber, not raw logs, written into China's procurement commitment as $9.882 billion in sales evaporates.

My career in the timber industry began in southern VT in 1998. When I started there were over 25 hardwood sawmills in Vermont ..all sawing over a million feet p/yr of grade logs. Today Im not sure if there are even 5 mills left.

Cable/ chainsaw loggers aren't common in NH anymore. Full time, productive ones ..even less so. The picture below is of a skidder owned by a central NH cable logger we have begun working with. He purchased this skidder new in 2003. still going strong and looks great for its age.
The slower pace of a cable operation is a nice change in this era of hustle & bustle

The announced closure of Finch Papers pulp mill seems hard to believe. They have been a part of my 28 yr forestry career since the beginning . Getting started in southern VT as a young kid ..Finch & IP Ticonderoga were the " big " mills for that area. Corinth & Deferiet closed 2-3 years later and Finch & IP were the survivors.
For some reason, losing them hits hard. Its like the death of an old timer in the industry you have known forever. That dumpy old mill in Glens Falls that seems like a throwback to another era and you thought would always be there...is now gone.
Another chapter ends.
