Design Spotlight: From Garage Apartment to Forever Home

Not every custom home starts with an empty piece of land.

This project began as a detached garage with a one-bedroom apartment above it. Rather than tearing it down, the homeowners wanted to preserve what they could and transform it into the home they had always envisioned.

The finished design expands the original structure into a spacious four-bedroom home with four full bathrooms and a flexible bonus room that can serve as a fifth bedroom or home office.

One of my favorite features is the three-quarter wraparound porch that leads into a vaulted screened lanai—perfect for enjoying North Georgia's beautiful seasons.

The biggest design challenge was connecting the existing apartment above the garage with the new second-floor addition. By extending an existing dormer and creating an open-to-below catwalk with windows on both sides, we were able to seamlessly blend the old and new while filling the space with natural light and views from both the front and back of the home.

Projects like this remind me that great design isn't always about starting from scratch. Sometimes it's about seeing the potential that's already there.

Design Spotlight: The Mountain Retreat

Some homes are designed to impress.

Others are designed to help you slow down.

This mountain A-frame was envisioned as the perfect getaway—a place where the pace of life naturally shifts with the view beyond the windows.

The soaring tongue-and-groove vaulted ceiling immediately draws your eyes upward before leading them through the expansive wall of glass to the mountain landscape beyond. Natural light fills the great room throughout the day, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere in every season.

A stacked stone fireplace anchors the living space, while rich hardwood floors and exposed wood finishes bring warmth and texture that perfectly complement the surrounding mountains.

One of my favorite features is the spiral staircase leading to the loft bedroom. It creates a unique architectural focal point while making the loft feel connected to the heart of the home below.

Whether it's a weekend retreat, a vacation cabin, or a full-time mountain residence, this design embraces what mountain living is all about—comfort, natural beauty, and spaces that invite you to slow down and simply enjoy where you are.

Sometimes the best room in a home isn't the biggest.

It's the one with the view.

Design Spotlight: Making the Most of a Sloped Lot

One of the biggest concerns I hear from homeowners is, "Can we really build on this property?"

In North Georgia, sloped lots are incredibly common, but with thoughtful planning they often become some of the most rewarding homes to design.

This custom home is a perfect example.

From the street, it presents itself as an inviting ranch-style home with a welcoming timber-framed porch, classic double gables, and an oversized three-car garage. It has a comfortable, approachable appearance that fits beautifully into its surroundings.

But the rear elevation tells an entirely different story.

As the terrain falls away, the home transforms into a spacious two-story design with a full walkout basement, dramatically expanding both the living space and the connection to the outdoors.

A large covered vaulted porch creates the perfect place to enjoy North Georgia's changing seasons, while expansive windows flood the home with natural light and capture views that simply wouldn't be possible on a flat lot.

Rather than fighting the landscape, this design embraces it.

It's one of the reasons I enjoy designing throughout North Georgia. Every property has its own character, and sometimes the land itself inspires the home's greatest features.

Design Spotlight: Timeless Character with Modern Comfort

Some homes don't need bold colors or elaborate details to make an impression.

This custom home was designed around timeless materials, clean architectural lines, and thoughtful details that create a warm, welcoming presence from the moment you arrive.

The light grayish-brown brick exterior gives the home a classic character that will stand the test of time, while the exposed timber entry and rustic wood shutters introduce just the right amount of warmth and contrast. Together, these natural materials create an inviting exterior that's equally at home in the North Georgia landscape or a quiet neighborhood setting.

Inside, the home was designed with everyday living in mind. An open floor plan encourages family gatherings while maintaining a comfortable flow from one space to the next. Whether hosting friends, celebrating holidays, or simply enjoying a quiet evening at home, every room was thoughtfully planned to support the way the homeowners live.

One of my favorite aspects of this design is its balance. It feels elegant without being formal, refined without being overdone, and classic without feeling dated. Those are the kinds of homes I enjoy designing most—homes that will still look just as beautiful decades from now.

Design Spotlight: Designed for Gathering

Some homes are designed around rooms.

Others are designed around the people who fill them.

This custom lake home was created with family, friends, and memorable gatherings in mind.

From the moment you enter, the home opens into a spacious great room with soaring ceilings and expansive views beyond. Large sliding glass doors connect the interior living spaces to the outdoors, allowing the home to flow naturally onto the wraparound rear porch and take full advantage of lake living.

At the heart of the home is a chef-inspired kitchen designed to handle everything from quiet mornings to large family celebrations. With generous prep space, abundant storage, and easy access to the surrounding gathering areas, it's a space built for entertaining.

Just beyond, a covered screened lanai features an outdoor fireplace and dedicated beverage area, creating a comfortable place to relax and enjoy the outdoors throughout much of the year.

The main level includes three private bedroom suites along with a conveniently located powder room for guests. Upstairs, two additional suites provide comfortable accommodations for extended family and visitors, while a secondary laundry area and dedicated game room make longer stays both convenient and enjoyable.

What I appreciate most about this design is how every space works together. Whether it's a holiday gathering, a summer weekend on the lake, or simply spending time with family, the home was thoughtfully designed to bring people together while still providing privacy and comfort when needed.

At just under 5,000 square feet, the home combines spacious interiors with an equally impressive connection to the outdoors. The vaulted great room serves as the heart of the home, creating an open and inviting space filled with natural light and framed views of the surrounding landscape.

The main level features a private primary suite complete with a spa-inspired bathroom, an additional bedroom suite for guests, a large walk-in pantry, and a three-car garage designed for both convenience and storage.

Downstairs, the fully finished basement transforms into an entertainment destination of its own, featuring a second living room with a fireplace, a dedicated game room, a personal gym, and two additional bedroom suites.

This guest house was designed to provide everything needed for full-time living while maintaining a compact and efficient footprint. With three bedrooms, two-and-a-half baths, a full kitchen, dining area, and a comfortable living space, it offers plenty of room for family and guests without feeling oversized.

One of my favorite features is the covered rear porch, which serves as an extension of the living space and creates a natural place to relax, gather, and enjoy the outdoors.

The unfinished basement below adds even more flexibility. With a built-in one-car garage and additional unfinished space, future owners have the option to create a workshop, recreation room, storage area, home office, or whatever their needs may become over time.

Thoughtful residential design isn't always about adding square footage. Often it's about creating spaces that are flexible, functional, and ready to adapt as life changes.

One of the things I enjoy most about residential design is creating homes that live larger than their square footage would suggest.

This modest modern cabin is a great example.

Designed with a single bedroom, one-and-a-half baths, and an open-concept kitchen and living area, the home focuses on simplicity, comfort, and connection to its surroundings. Rather than adding unnecessary square footage, the design prioritizes the spaces where homeowners spend the most time.

The true highlights of this home are its relationship to the outdoors.

Large expanses of glass fill the living room and kitchen with natural light while capturing mountain views beyond. A spacious deck extends the living area outside, with a generous covered section that can be enjoyed during every season and in almost any weather.

An unfinished basement below provides flexibility for the future, whether as additional entertaining space, a guest suite, a second bedroom, or simply extra storage as needs change over time.

Thoughtful design isn't always about building bigger. Sometimes it's about creating the right spaces and making every square foot work harder.
