Sometimes the problem isn’t what it looks like at first. 👀
Our customer is currently in Japan visiting family, but she is renting out one of her properties here in Northeast Georgia. Her tenants started calling because the system was backing up.
The tank had just been pumped in July by another company, who advised them there was a possible drain field failure.
When we got there, the tank was extremely overfilled, and based on what we were seeing, we agreed that the drain field was not functioning and gave her a quote to replace it.
The quote was approved and we were about to apply for a permit, but then we received the county records, and something wasn’t adding up so we did some more investigating with the camera and a shovel.
If we were wrong, we were prepared to eat the cost of the investigation. If we were right, we could potentially save our customer thousands of dollars.
Turns out, someone had cut the outlet pipe off the tank and installed a closed cleanout so a camper could dump directly into the tank.
Which meant the tank was completely disconnected from the drain field.
So technically, yes, the drain field wasn’t functioning. But it wasn’t because the drain field had failed. It simply wasn’t receiving anything 😬
We:
💩 Removed the closed cleanout
💩 Reconnected the tail-out line to the tank
💩 Confirmed flow into the drain field
💩 Installed the cleanout on the inlet side of the tank
💩 Removed and replaced both concrete baffles with PVC
🚫 No drain field replacement needed 🚫
A little more investigation saved our customer a whole lot of 💰💰💰
Happy customer. Happy tenants. ✅
