I had some spare time in the shop today, so I stained the dog bowl box a pecan color and gave it 2 satin poly coats. I've always used oil base poly, but I think next time I will try a water base poly. I like these rustic builds, as I don't have to sand so deep and flaws are accentuated, not hidden. Still, though, I am starting to get that craving to work fine virgin wood like cherry or walnut again.
What to build now?

Simple prototype made from reclaimed wood I had lying around. Testing different pet dish/storage combo builds. This came out fair enough as a proof of concept, but it needs some artistic embellishment, maybe a sliding drawer, some hidden hinges. It does feature back-bevel handles on the side.
It was painted white, and I sanded most of it off, leaving just a hint here and there, to give it the distressed, well-used look. It needs poly, or a stain and then poly.
The wood is boxwood, a type I am not fond of at all, but it is what I have on hand. I find it to be ugly and soft and it lacks grain, but those are all reasons people made boxes out of them back in the day. People don't generally use boxwood today. I would call boxwood "Nature's MDF."

Sometimes I hear people say that you cannot do much with Trex or composite decking besides use the material as deck boards, but I hereby submit this for approval. Besides the framing internally, this entire bench seat with lifting lids was built using composite.
Of particular note: the mitred corners of the back rest, and the returns on the seat lid that hide the ugly side profile of the composite. To think too this is a deck I helped build when I was still an apprentice, and I was able to pull off work like that with the proper guidance from a master.
