In 1981, the world didn’t know it needed another architecture firm, but our founder did. Our firm grew and prospered, and after thirty years we believe we’ve made a positive difference in the communities we serve. We are proud of the notion that we have left things better than we found them, and that the exterior and interior spaces we have created strive to inspire their occupants and elevate our

client’s mission. We are now well into our “next generation” and, as you have probably noticed, we have changed our name from MBAJ to Boomerang. Not just because “M” and “B” have retired and not just because there is only a one in twenty four chance of getting the acronym right, but because of what a boomerang symbolizes to us… read on.

Our team had a blast attending Wake Tech’s 9th annual Ignite celebration this week. Hosted by the Wake Tech Foundation, the Ignite program celebrates the life-altering impact of education and the innovative ways Wake Tech and its partners help students reach their educational and career goals through storytelling and community.

Our team is honored to be a part of Wake Tech’s mission to inspire and uplift students. The ability to not only create quality educational buildings on their campus but also serve as visible role models for their students so that they can see themselves in the A/E/C industry is truly a privilege.

To celebrate the end of the beautiful fall season, our Raleigh team enjoyed a picnic and hike at William B. Umstead State Park. Much of Boomerang’s design inspiration comes from North Carolina’s natural features, and our team enjoyed the opportunity to reconnect with nature and find inspiration from our local landmarks.

Introducing the North Carolina Emergency Training Center (NCETC)! 🚒🚨

Located in New London, North Carolina, this new facility has been designed to become the most advanced emergency training center in the country. NCETC delivers realistic, high-impact instruction across multiple disciplines, including Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF), Swift Water Rescue, Urban Search and Rescue, hazardous materials response, and fire investigation.

The initial 28-acre phase has been completed. This first phase of design included a Boeing 737/C130-modeled aircraft for Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF) training, along with a Swiftwater Rescue course in a controlled setting. Our team is currently working on a 30-acre Fire Service Operations campus that is currently in development and will include a three-bay non-response fire station, student housing, and specialized facilities for hazardous materials training, earthquake resiliency, and drone operations.

This second phase of work is set to be completed in 2027. Stay tuned for more updates from our team on this exciting project.

We’re excited to announce the completion of our latest project: Cooper Academy. This expansion has added 24 modern classrooms to the campus, effectively doubling the student capacity from 450 to 900. Our design was shaped by the unique needs of the Cooper Academy community, creating a space that promotes connectivity, accessibility, and safety throughout the campus.

A notable feature of this expansion is the new enclosed walkway, which ensures safe movement between buildings for both students and staff. We have also reconfigured existing offices and guidance centers to streamline operations and enhance student safety.

A big thank you to everyone involved in bringing this vision to life. We look forward to seeing how these new spaces will inspire the next generation of learners!
