💥 THIS DAY IN DIRT — AUGUST 27

On this day in 1959, a Seattle school that had stood since 1903 was demolished to make way for something MUCH bigger…

The 1962 World’s Fair.

The land where the school once stood eventually became part of the site for the arena and the famous International Fountain.

🏗️ That’s the thing about demolition:

Sometimes tearing something down isn’t the end of the story.

It’s where the next one starts. 💥

💥 DEMOLITION HISTORY YOU PROBABLY NEVER KNEW

In 1930, they needed this building out of the way.

It weighed approximately 11,000 TONS — 22 MILLION pounds.

So naturally, you’d demolish it, right?

Nope. They moved the entire building. 😳

The Indiana Bell building in Indianapolis was moved and rotated 90 degrees — while people continued working INSIDE.

Telephone service continued. The utilities stayed connected. Employees could still enter and leave.

The building crept along at only about 15 inches per hour, so slowly that the people working inside reportedly couldn’t even feel it moving.

And after accomplishing one of the craziest building moves in history?

The building was eventually demolished anyway. 😂

We’ve come a long way in the demolition business.
