A broken garbage disposal can be frustrating, but don’t worry—here are some simple steps to troubleshoot the issue before calling for help:
Check the Power: Make sure the disposal is plugged in and check the circuit breaker to ensure it hasn’t tripped.
Press the Reset Button: Locate the red reset button on the bottom of the disposal. Press it, and if it pops out again, it might need to cool down before resetting.
Inspect for Jams: Turn off the disposal and use a flashlight to check for anything stuck inside (like utensils or food). Never stick your hand in the disposal! Use tongs or pliers to remove obstructions.
Manually Turn the Blades: Insert a hex key (usually included with the disposal) into the bottom slot and rotate it to free any jams.
Listen for Humming: If you hear a humming noise but the blades aren’t moving, it may indicate a motor issue or a jam that still needs clearing.
If none of these steps work, it’s time to call the pros! Avoid causing more damage by forcing it to work.
