The latest pics from the “England in Florida” garden in Tampa Bay. I’ve increased seeding in winter, which has helped cut down on pot-grown nursery plants. Next year, we’ll add more natives!
We’ve got Mini-beckia (rudbeckia, with the coppery centers), regular pure yellow rudbeckia, salvia h. for the bees, coreopsis (both the airy native Leavenworth’s & nursery red-centered), a pink mallow I’ve lost the name of (seed), blanketflower, blue daze, ilex ‘Schillings’ (the boxwood-like shrub, native), and more! The seed-to-nursery-bought ratio is almost even now.
I’m very pleased with this garden — aside from weeding every few weeks & two seasonal plantings/clean ups, it doesn’t need much.

“England in Florida”, my first Floridian garden, is now in its fifth year.
I let the garden go unmaintained for 6 weeks, just to let the seedlings come along on their own. The cosmos are way too tall and the yellow finally rudbeckia flowered (although nothing like last year’s display, which filled half the garden and started in February.) The pink mallow is also from seed.
Trimming and clean up starts next week!
Despite being a floral garden, it really only calls for maintenance once a month.
You need MORE flowers, not less, to reduce maintenance and keep the weeds down!

This is the best shade plant for Central & South Florida. The daisy-like flowers pop up over the glossy leaves in winter, sometimes putting on a second showing in spring. It can tolerate very bright shade, somewhat low water once grown in, and will always do its part in the landscape.
Cold outside? Not a problem! Unless there’s an actual freeze, they do just fine.
This is Farfugium japonicum, AKA ‘Tractor Seat.’ It visually reads like lily pads or even works to replace hostas for Northern style gardens. (I’ve tried ‘Sun Hostas’ but everything eats hostas. They make it three weeks, maybe.)
Let me know if you want to see this plant in your landscape!

Latest install at the “Semi-Formal Cottage” design!
I went bright springtime colors, intending to keep it going until June. But with an acre of space to still landscape, we have plenty of areas to do in the future! We just did the front of the house to have it pretty before Christmas. Thank you to my crew, lead by L. Molina, for getting demo and install done in one full day!

Before/After’s of in Downtown Clearwater! I went with bold colors, using hot orange and watermelon pink geraniums. Bright green foxtail ferns will hold the garden together throughout the seasons.
Would you want a garden like this? I could fit in two or three more clients before Christmas if you’re interested! Contact me for a consult!

BABY TREE GUIDE: How to Choose the Right Young Tree
When you go to the baby tree store (meaning the plant nursery), you’re going to be surround by cute little trees all looking for a good home.

But which tree is the right one?

In Florida, we have a tree grading system, which is very helpful for the average Joe.

You’ll want to get a FLORIDA FANCY tree.

A FLORIDA FANCY tree will have:

- A straight trunk
- Branches that are not too thick relative to the young trunk
- A crown (the leafy part) that is uniform in shape
- A rootball that doesn’t wrap around itself or have thick roots above the soil line

There’s more to know, but that’s really the basics of it. Here’s a bunch of sketches I did at Tree School last year, which also mentions how to decide WHICH tree to get.
