Is Salt Water Conductive?
Pure water is not very conductive, and only a tiny bit of current can move through the water. When salt or sodium chloride (NaCl) is dissolved in it, however, the salt molecules split into two pieces, a sodium ion and a chlorine ion. The sodium ion is missing an electron, which gives it a positive charge. The saltwater bridges the gap between L1 & L2 which may short out and potentially cause a fire. If your system has been flooded, it's important to get it looked at and more than likely will need to be replaced. I spoke to the city yesterday about permits for replacement of the OUTDOOR UNIT only as that's typically what was flooded. AS of now they will not allow for the outdoor unit to be replaced on its own. They want the ENTIRE UNIT changed to be in line with the EPA efficiency standards. This forces folks to replace the Air Handler as well when it wasn't even damaged. Local municipalities are meeting to see what the next step will be regarding this.
