Did you know?

The photo below shows the Santa Fe Shops in Cleburne in 1940. The history of Cleburne is more railroad-centric than the history of just about any other Texas town. Consider: On October 21, 1881 the first railroad pulled into Cleburne and was greeted by over 1,000 spectators. In 1897, Cleburne won out over Dallas, Fort Worth, and Temple to become the location of the biggest Santa Fe shops west of the Mississippi, where they repaired and manufactured locomotives and other rail cars. The Cleburne Santa Fe Shops brought prosperity to Cleburne and were the town’s largest employer for a century. Although the shops closed in 1989, the story oif the railroad is an integral part of Cleburne history. (information from Traces of Texas)

The oldest business in Cleburne under the same ownership is the Layland Plumbing Company located at 114 N. Caddo Street. W.J. Layland opened he Layland Plumbing Company in 1904 and it is still in the Layland family.
