We keep on planting - our culinary and horticulture students keep on increasing our garden - Bryan, Chandler and Walker prepped a new bed using the double-digging technique. Then hort program veteran helped plant a cover crop of oats and peas in the new bed to enrich the soil.
Spring planted veggies 🥕 in the Hoophouse will be ready next week.

Kim noticed speckling on the leaves of the verbenas in our hanging baskets - a likely sign of nutrient deficiency.
But if the soil pH is incorrect the plant can be unable to take up nutrients even if they are present in the soil.
So Kim measured the pH of our baskets and then compared it to the recommended pH for verbena from a culture sheet - and sure enough our soil pH was climbing too high. Good thing we caught the problem early.
What great students we have!

Spring has sprung at LTC horticulture.
Culinary students seeding and transplanting in our outdoor garden.
And Jeff Edger from Silver Creek Nursery was kind enough to join our Greenhouse and Nursery production class to teach grafting. Here Kim is making a cut to join together 2 different little leaf linden cultivars under Jeff’s expert eye.
Thank you Jeff!

Owner Kris at Caan’s floral and assistant head grower Jesse kindly spent Tuesday morning discussing the finer points of greenhouse growing with students in our Greenhouse and Nursery Production class at the Caan's greenhosues.
Here Jesse demonstrated pinching back early flowers in hanging baskets and healthy root development.
In our own LTC greenhouse, student Jesse is potting up 10'' hanging baskets . . . available at the LTC Horticulture Club Plant Sale, May 14th in downtown Plantboygan.

The fun never ends when you’re with plant nerds -
Repotting a GIANT jade (grown by former instructor Ray Rogers) requires a sawzall!
Chris is showing off all the perennials that we have grown, now in our unheated Hoophouse.
And it’s that time of year when we uncover our outdoor vegetable beds and find spinach alive and kicking.
Happy Spring!

Hi hort fans, it’s been a minute. Hope you’ve been well. It’s that time of year, and our LTC greenhouse is filling up with the results of our students’ quality work.
Here is the crew bumping up perennials that we started from seed into larger containers - they are getting quite good at transplanting.
We get to learn about different growing spaces - a truckload of perennials moving from the heated greenhouse to our unheated Hoophouse - making way for even more plants arriving.

It is so fun growing food with the chefs from our school's Culinary program in our Culinary Plants class. Chandler planted the seeds of this lettuce mix, radishes, and salad turnips in September, and harvested them this Monday. Here he is yesterday preparing a delightful salad with our veggies for a Chef's Table event that I was honored to be invited to.
I was so impressed to see my students in their element and happy to enjoy their delicious food.
