⚡ Ice Storm Electrical Safety Tips
🔌 Before & During the Storm
• Avoid downed power lines – Always assume they are live and dangerous.
• Stay away from sagging or ice-covered lines – Ice adds weight and can cause lines to snap suddenly.
• Unplug sensitive electronics to prevent damage from power surges.
• Use flashlights, not candles to reduce fire risk.
• Keep phones and battery packs charged in case of outages.
⸻
🔥 Generator Safety
• Never run generators indoors, in garages, or near windows/doors – Carbon monoxide can be deadly.
• Always shut off the main breaker before using a generator to prevent backfeeding and protect linemen.
• Use heavy-duty, outdoor-rated extension cords only.
• Let generators cool before refueling.
⸻
🏠 If Power Lines or Equipment Are Damaged
• Do not touch anything in contact with a power line (trees, fences, puddles, vehicles).
• Report downed lines immediately to the power company.
• If a line falls on your car, stay inside unless there is immediate danger.
⸻
⚠️ After Power Is Restored
• Turn appliances back on gradually to avoid overload.
• Check for damaged cords or outlets before using them.
• If you smell burning or see sparks, turn off power and call an electrician.
⸻
🚧 Outdoor Safety
• Watch for hidden power lines under ice or tree limbs.
• Keep children and pets away from damaged electrical areas.
