Gutters may not be the first thing you notice on a home, but they play a big role in protecting it.

When gutters are clogged, leaking, sagging, or pulling away, water can end up where it should not be, including near your foundation, siding, fascia, and landscaping.

Signs your gutters may need attention:

✅ Water spilling over the edges
✅ Sagging or pulling away
✅ Cracks, rust, or leaks
✅ Water pooling near the foundation
✅ Leaves and debris causing blockages

Sedlock Construction installs gutters and gutter guards to help protect your home from costly water damage.

A quick post on gutters... Can a good installed and clean gutters still get a substantial amout of discharge from your gutters during a downpour? The answer is, yes.
According to AI search

"Yes, even high-quality gutters can have substantial watery discharge during a downpour. While they are designed to channel water, sudden torrential rain can briefly overwhelm a system's capacity, causing water to sheet off the roof or splash over the front edge".

However, if water is constantly cascading over the edge or pooling, it usually points to specific structural or maintenance issues. The primary culprits include:

Sudden Volume: Flash flood-level downpours exceed the carrying capacity of even spotless, properly pitched 5" or 6" gutters.

Clogged Downspouts: Debris like leaves or twigs can back up inside downspouts, preventing water from escaping even if the horizontal gutters are relatively clean.

Improper Pitch: Gutters require a specific downward slope (usually about \(\frac{1}{4}\) inch for every 10 feet of gutter run) to guide water to the downspouts. If the pitch is too flat, water will pool and spill over the edge during intense rain.

Missing Drip Edge Flashing: If water is leaking behind the gutter instead of into it, you may need to extend the roof drip edge (flashing) directly into the gutter trough. To figure out if your discharge is a harmless overload or an actual problem, let me know:Is the water pouring over the front lip or leaking out the back of the gutter?Have you checked the downspout outlets for clogs?

Yes, even perfectly installed gutters can get overwhelmed during exceptionally heavy downpours. Gutters are generally sized to handle standard rainfall, but extreme, high-intensity storms can dump water faster than the gutter channels or downspouts can safely evacuate it.Several factors cause this temporary overflow:Downspout Capacity: Standard downspouts (usually 2 × 3 or 3 × 4 inches) can only process a finite volume of water per minute. If the intake exceeds that rate, the water backs up over the gutter's front edge.

Water Momentum: During severe rain, water moving swiftly off a steep roof can overshoot the gutter channel entirely, bypassing the system.

Surface Tension: Water naturally clings to the underside of roof shingles. In light rain, it drips into the gutter, but in a heavy sheet, it can run behind the gutter, defeating the installation.

Solutions for Overflowing Gutters:Add Downspouts: Increasing the number of downspouts or upgrading to larger 4 × 5-inch downspouts increases the system's drainage capacity.

Install Gutter Guards: Premium mesh gutter guards can help break the speed of heavy water, directing it downward into the trough rather than letting it overshoot.
