😲 Alert: Please DON'T remove! Hummingbirds are counting on you to NOT w**d these plants (or at least not all of them).

Hummingbirds rely on Jewelw**d (Impatiens capensis) later in the summer when there's less for them to eat....at exactly the time when they're trying to fatten up for their migrations south.

💐 We think Eastern Rose Mallow makes a nice native alternative to peony bushes which are from Asia. he blooms are big, showy and beautifully pink.

Like peonies, Mallows die down completely in winter and then reemerge as shrubby, bushy perennials in the spring and summer.

Rose Mallow loves the hot humid weather that peonies do not, and big bonus: they attract and feed songbirds, hummingbirds, large butterflies and bumblebees.

🐣 Hummingbirds are nesting right NOW. Cool facts about their nests:

- They're often found in Red or White Oaks, Red or Sugar Maples, or Birch trees
- The nests are the size of a water bottle cap
- Spiderwebs are used as glue to keep the nest intact
- The birds camouflage the nest with moss or lichen
- The males don't help at all with parenting or nest building
- Hummingbird eggs are the size of tic tacs
- Babies leave the nest as soon as 18 days after hatching

PS Encourage hummingbirds to nest in your yard by planting native plants like Jewelw**d, Red Columbine, Butterfly Milkw**d, Coral Honeysuckle and Swamp Azalea

🤓 Looking for a native w**d suppressant? Consider Ostrich ferns and Ladyferns. Both thrive in shade and create a thick shady canopy that prevents invasive plants from taking root.

They also provide great cover for ground nesting birds to build their nests...and a cool spot for frogs to hang out and hide from the summer sunshine.

😲 OH NO! Do you have Japanese Barberry in your yard? If you do, you might have MORE ticks, too.

These shrubs, now illegal to purchase in Massachusetts, were once super popular...but they are extremely invasive. If that isn't enough to convince you to ditch yours, they're ALSO known to harbor ticks. Might be time to remove it?!

A nice alternative is a Winterberry Holly which also has those winter red berries that people love Barberry for....but its berries are much more nutritious for our local songbirds.

🥀 Why are Red Columbine & hummingbirds perfect for each other?

Since the flower's nectar is located at the top of long, tube-like flowers, very few insects can get to it...but hummingbirds have super long tongues and bills which reach perfectly.

PS Bumblebees have figured out a workaround: they hang upside down from the yellow area and use their "muscles" to climb to the nectar, getting completely coated in pollen on the way.

😲 Just one invasive plant could have risked this entire forest...but we didn't let it! Can you spot the single Garlic Mustard in this woodland setting in Cohasset?

We're happy to report that we've been monitoring this particular patch of conservation land for 10+ years and have FINALLY gotten the Garlic Mustard under control. Now the ferns, Starflowers, Jack in the Pulpit, Red Trillium, Wild Geranium, Trout Lilies, Canada Mayflower and Jewelw**d can thrive---and help support local wildlife while they do it. 😀

👋 Important fact: This is what invasive Garlic Mustard looks like in most spots in Massachusetts right now.

Most identification photos show it with white flowers, but the petals have largely dropped by now (unless it is in deep, cool shade), so you may think it's not there. It is. 😔

Please pull by the roots, bag it and throw away with the trash. Don't compost! You have 2-3 more weeks before it goes to seed and then each plant becomes up to 3,000. Yikes!

🐝 Did you know: honeybees are livestock, not native wildlife? While they may not get so much press, our local pollinators--like tiny syrphid (hover) flies-- deserve a little love.

Syrphid flies look like teensy bees, but they do not sting. In their larval stage they eat masses of aphids (thank you!) and when they grow up, they are powerhouse pollinators for your garden.

They love plants in the daisy/aster family, herbs and blueberry bushes.
