🧱 Thursday Training: The Most Important Part of Your Patio You’ll Never See 🧱
Most homeowners focus on the pavers, colors, and patterns when planning a patio.
The reality? The most important part of your patio is buried underneath it.
One of the most common reasons patios fail is an improperly constructed foundation. Settling, shifting, uneven pavers, and drainage issues often start below the surface long before they’re visible above it.
At A&E Outdoors, we believe the foundation is the most important part of any hardscape project. That’s why our patio installations include:
✅ Proper excavation and preparation of the subgrade
✅ Thorough compaction of the native soil before any base is installed
✅ Geotextile separation fabric to help keep the base and native soils separated
✅ At least 6” of compacted 3/4” clear granite base
✅ Proper compaction of the base material in lifts
✅ 1” of 1/4” clear granite screed material
✅ Professional edge restraint and polymeric sand installation
Each of these steps helps create a patio that drains properly, stays level, and stands up to Minnesota’s harsh freeze-thaw cycles.
Why does this matter?
Minnesota’s freeze-thaw cycles are tough on patios. Without proper subgrade preparation, geotextile separation, adequate base depth, and proper compaction, patios can settle, shift, hold water, and develop trip hazards over time.
A well-built patio starts long before the first paver is laid. By focusing on proper construction methods and proven installation standards, we’re able to build outdoor spaces designed to perform for years to come.
The pavers are what homeowners see on day one. The foundation is what determines how that patio looks five, ten, and twenty years from now.
Have questions about a patio project or wondering if your existing patio was built correctly? We’d be happy to help.
