πΏ Plant of the Week β Variegated Shell Ginger (Alpinia zerumbet 'Variegata')
Happy Monday! We're into Week 4 of our Plant of the Week series, and this week we're going full tropical.
Meet Variegated Shell Ginger β one of the most dramatic and lush-looking plants you can grow in a California garden. Those bold, arching leaves striped in green and cream give it a resort-style feel that instantly transforms a space. It moves beautifully in the breeze, grows quickly, and works in spots where a lot of other plants struggle β partial sun, dappled shade, even full shade.
From late spring through fall, it produces cascading clusters of fragrant, shell-shaped flowers in white with pink and yellow accents. They're as beautiful as they are fragrant, and pollinators can't resist them.
Why we love planting this one:
πΏ Bold variegated foliage provides year-round interest
πΈ Fragrant blooms from late spring all the way through fall
π΄ Brings a lush, tropical feel to any yard or garden
βοΈ Thrives in partial sun to full shade β great for tricky spots
π Grows 6β8 ft. tall, 4β6 ft. wide β excellent for privacy screens
π‘ Ideal for borders, containers, poolside, and shade gardens
This is one of our go-to recommendations when clients want something different β something that makes their yard feel genuinely special and a little unexpected.
