Are you ready for some arctic blasts?

Native plants show a lot of seasonal change in their growth cycles. This includes a winter slow-down or browning of growth. For many species, it's good for them to be touched by cold 🥶 and they know how to spring back when it warms up 😅

Firebush will freeze back, and resprout from its base in the spring. When we don't get cold weather it can be good to cut them anyway. So this is a helping hand.

Native plum trees will gain some cold accumulation and bloom fuller and denser with the extra chill.

Spiderwort is such a surprising plant, blooming now in the landscape and showing some color through the browning grasses. Keep an eye on their resilience this season.

Take care of your plant babies and let the cold lovers enjoy!

The Wildest of the limes! Pairs well with swallowtails, tequila and gardeners with an attitude

Its a shrubby tree for the first 5 years and then can be trimmed up into a formal specimen tree. Perfect for safety/ privacy hedge when you expect a few pricks. For the most part its easy to prune and regular gloves keep things civil.

Wanted to give a shoutout to the rattlesnake master - Eringium yuccifolium. Over the past 5 years I've seen this planted in more native landscapes from Central FL to North Carolina. This patch is growing in an Orlando sandhill that gets burned... and look at the response!

It has also grown just as large in the wildflower meadow at the UF IFAS Extension Orange County where they have simply mowed it down to mimic a burn.

This is one to add to that wildflower mix you've been working on!

And Another One!!!

Yep, we reimagined what a septic drain field could look like. Shallow rooting wildflowers was the very first consideration.

Maintenance paths help shape the beds and now the summertime rains and extreme heat will encourage these species to grow big - super fast.

The photo series covers a span of 8 months. .. From our first meeting for design to our maintenance consultation follow-up.

3 days over the course of 3 months makes quite a difference.

Lakeshores rarely get so much plant love, yet the 4-10 feet leading to the water's edge is a micro-diversity hotspot. So many great Florida plants like 'wet feet'. They provide herbivores and pollinators with the plants and flowers they need, stabilize soil during heavy winds or water surges, and filter all that runoff from the surrounding property - especially when sod gets fertilized so heavily.

Day 1 : We cleaned up the plastic debris and as many fragments of concrete we could remove. Previous contractors decided to dump by the lake rather than remove.

Day 2 : We brought in a soil/sand mix to level the ground for pathways and ease of planting. Bringing in extra soil and heavy pine straw mulch can bury old seed banks to help suppress aggressive w**d growth as the landscape gets established.

Day 3 : We followed the design, planted diverse groupings of plants and laid a pathway thick with washed shell. Shells will settle over time and with pathway use. Starting with a solid foundation makes maintenance and upkeep easier over the first 1-3 years.

Bought it, built it, but I wasn't finished

I'm sad to report my trailer was stolen from West winter park last Wednesday. Behind a locked fence and with 3 locks on the trailer itself wasn't enough to detur someone.

There are a few distinct characteristics about this trailer. Its 7ft tall, which is a little more than normal, 14ft long and 6.5ft wide, wheel wells are on the outside.

There are two rooftop ventilation domes. Most trailers have one, if any at all.

The inside is super distinct, and I hope the person who stole it realizes they took much more than just a landscaping trailer.

Police reports have been filed and now I keep watch. Hopeful it just shows up in a safe parking lot..... because it's possible to make a good choice, even right after a bad one.

A special Thank you to anyone who may see something like this on the road and can report it to non-emergency or to me directly.
