Before you grab the pruning shears, read this. 🌳

With the August temperatures rising in Colorado Springs, homeowners are looking at their brown evergreens, scorched maples, and crispy aspens wondering the same thing: is it dead?

The honest answer: maybe not. But what you do in the next 48 hours makes all the difference.

Here's what most people get wrong after a heat event like this one:

❌ They prune the scorched leaves off immediately — those burnt outer leaves are actually shading and protecting the inner branches. Remove them now, and you risk burning the tissue that was previously protected.

❌ They fertilize because the tree "looks sick" — nitrogen forces new growth the tree cannot hydrate in extreme heat. It makes things dramatically worse.

❌ They water at the trunk with a surface sprinkler — baked Colorado clay repels water at the surface. It evaporates before it ever reaches the roots.

Here's what actually does work:

✅ Cycle-and-soak deep irrigation at the drip line, early morning

✅ 3–4 inches of organic mulch over the entire root zone to drop soil temps

✅ Leave scorched foliage alone until temperatures stabilize

✅ Start planning late-August root recovery before winter arrives

At 6,000+ feet, our UV is 25% stronger than at sea level. When air temps hit 100°F, unshaded leaf surfaces can exceed 120°F. This heat event hits Colorado Springs trees hard, and the window to save them is short.

We just published a complete guide with diagnosis tips, step-by-step triage, and a late-season recovery plan.

Your garden survived spring. Now comes the harder part. 🦌

Most deer and wildlife advice is written for April. But here in Colorado Springs, the real pressure hits in July and August when natural forage in the mountains dries up and desperate animals come downhill looking for something green and irrigated.

Sound familiar if you live in Kissing Camels, Broadmoor, or anywhere along the foothills?

Here's what most people don't realize: a drought-stressed deer in August will eat plants it completely ignored in May. The same repellents, the same deterrents, the same "deer-resistant" plants that worked all spring suddenly stop working, because the animal is no longer being selective. It's being desperate.

We just published a guide on exactly this late-summer wildlife problem, including:

🌿 How to design a "second line of defense" using plants wildlife won't eat

🦌 Which aromatic and textural plants deter even desperate late-season deer

🐇 Why your irrigation schedule might be making the problem worse

🐻 What the bear factor means for foothills-adjacent properties right now

This isn't a generic deer article. It's written specifically for what's happening in Colorado Springs gardens right now, in late July.

Have you been seeing more wildlife in your yard this summer than earlier in the season? Drop a comment; we'd love to hear where you're located. 👇

As Colorado's mountains dry out in July, desperate wildlife invades Springs neighborhoods. Design gardens that look stunning but deter even hungry deer.

It's 7:30 PM. The sky over Pikes Peak is doing something incredible. The conversation is flowing. And then... someone grabs a sweatshirt. Then another. By 9 PM, everyone's inside. 🥶

Sound familiar?

It's not that your patio isn't nice; it's that it wasn't designed for how Colorado Springs evenings actually work.

Every summer night here drops 25-35°F the moment the sun disappears behind the mountains. That's not a minor chill. That's a completely different climate than your afternoon. And most standard patio designs completely ignore it.

Here's what actually keeps people outside after dark in Colorado Springs:

🔥 Custom stone fire pits engineered to radiate heat, not just to look good
🏠 Sheltered outdoor kitchens positioned to trap warmth near the gathering area
💨 Wind-blocking walls and overhead structures that stop the mountain breeze from stealing your heat
💡 Warm-toned lighting that makes the space feel inviting even as temperatures drop

We just published an intro on how to design outdoor living spaces specifically for Colorado's cool summer evenings, including the physics of why our nights cool so fast, and the specific design choices that make a real difference.

If your patio empties out by 8 PM every summer night, this one's for you. 👇

Ever wonder why the plants in your front yard are thriving while the exact same species in your backyard are struggling? It might not be your green thumb—it’s geography. 🗺️

In Colorado Springs, a single residential property can host two completely different summer climates. Your south-facing zones endure intense, high-altitude sun, while your north-facing areas stay shaded, damp, and cool.

If you plant the same things on both sides, you’re setting yourself up for frustration. We’re breaking down the science of property microclimates and how a smart landscape blueprint works with the sun, not against it.
