🌱A handsome, fast growing evergreen that forms a stately, dark green, densely branched column well-suited for use as a formal accent, screen or windbreak. In its natural form, the symmetrical, pyramidal shape rarely needs pruning. An excellent specimen for formal topiary. Tolerates heat, cold and drought.

☀️ Full Sun

💦 Water when top 2 inches of soil is dry.

🌿Grows 15 ft. tall, 5 ft. wide in natural form.

💚Highly adaptable and easy to grow in most well-drained soils; avoid overly wet conditions. Water deeply, regularly during first growing season to establish an extensive root system. Once established, reduce frequency; tolerates mild drought. Apply a slow-release fertilizer before new growth begins in spring. Prune annually to shape.

⭐️ Great for creating privacy around your property perimeter.

❄️Winter Lawn Care
Colorado winters can be tough on your lawns. From hard freezes to snow, and even dry periods, can all have damaging impacts on your lawn. Here are some things you can do to make sure your lawn is prepped for a Colorado winter.

🧹Clean Up
While some believe that dead leaves provide a natural fertilizer for their lawn, this is not the case. Leaves and other debris left on your lawn through the winter can actually keep your lawn from breathing and kill it. Be sure to get rid of leaves and other debris before the first snow so it can soak in the moisture and breathe once it has melted away.

✂️Mow Your Lawn Until It Stops Growing
In Colorado, it is not uncommon for your lawn to continue growing through November and into December. It all depends on what the weather has been like. You should mow until your grass stops growing, or in other words, becomes dormant. There is no need to lower your mowing levels either. You don’t want to stop mowing too early because long grass can lead to the same problems as leaving leaves on your lawn.

👣Keep Traffic to a Minimum
During the winter, your lawn will go dormant, and foot traffic can cause long-term damage to your grass and prevent greening in the spring. Keep the wear and tear on your lawn to a minimum. If it has snowed and ice has built upon the grass, you can increase foot traffic in those areas to help break up ice and help the lawn breathe better. Be careful not to overdo it!

🧂Watch the Ice-Melts and Salts
Be careful not to get any ice-melts and salts on your lawn. They can damage your grass and cause some long-term problems. Be sure that your ice-melts and salts stay on pavement only!

💊Use a Winterizing Fertilizer
To really prep your lawn for the winter, you should consider laying a winterizing fertilizer in October or November. This kind of fertilizer will help keep your lawn fed during the winter months. Be sure to aerate your lawn before fertilizing to ensure the nutrients get all the way down to the roots.

🌾 Create a stunning vertical effect with feathery stalks that emerge reddish brown in spring and turn a rich golden color in fall. Blooms two to three weeks earlier than common feather reed grass. Thrives in wet soils, yet tolerates drier conditions. Stalks make great cut flowers. Sterile seeds do not produce unwanted seedlings.
🌾 This low growing ornamental grass is colorful and ever changing. With feathery flower spikes that emerge reddish-brown in spring and turn golden to buff in fall, it adds a lovely accent to naturalist, craftsman, or prarie gardens. Use as a vertical among low-growing plants or have a pair planted in distressed metal pots or bronzed urns for a minimalist look. Perfect near water gardens or terraced patios where the breeze causes the grass to sway gracefully.

In Colorado, heavy, wet snows in the late spring or early autumn are common. Trees, shrubs and perennials are caught in full leaf or just at the peak of bloom. These “limb-breaker” storms cause severe damage that leaves permanent scars and tends to keep trees to smaller-than-normal size.

Following such a storm, tree diseases tend to increase. Broken limbs and central leaders can cause problems for trees for many years. To minimize damage, choose less brittle trees such as lindens, oaks and conifers instead of silver maple, Siberian elm and willow. This, however, brings about another dilemma. The less brittle ones are also the slower-growing ones.

Spring may be special, but fall is fine for planting.

In spring, plants don’t grow until the soil warms up.

Fall has more good days for planting than spring does, when rain and other unpredictable weather can make working the soil impossible.

Fall is the best time to plant pansies because the still-warm soil temperatures give their roots time to establish.

After the soil freezes, mulch plants to prevent alternate freezing and thawing cycles that can heave plants out of the ground.

Fall is an ideal time to plant trees and shrubs.
