How a Clogged Filter Restricts Airflow

To understand the problem, it helps to know how your HVAC system is designed to operate.

The blower motor pulls air through your return ducts and pushes it through the filter. From there, air moves across the heat exchanger in heating mode or the evaporator coil during cooling mode before being distributed throughout your home. When the filter is clean, airflow moves freely.

As dust, pet hair, and airborne debris accumulate, the filter's tiny openings begin to clog. The filter starts acting like a coffee filter that's filled with grounds—air can still pass through, but not efficiently.

As resistance increases:
-Airflow decreases
-Static pressure rises
-The blower motor works harder
-System efficiency drops

Low refrigerant levels can disrupt the normal pressure and temperature balance within an air conditioning system, often causing the evaporator coil to become excessively cold and freeze. As ice forms on the coil or refrigerant lines, airflow and heat transfer are restricted, reducing system performance and potentially triggering safety controls that shut the system down.

When you have a refrigerant leak not only reduces cooling capacity but also places additional strain on the compressor, one of the most expensive components to repair or replace. If a refrigerant leak is suspected, a licensed HVAC technician should locate and repair the source of the leak before the system is recharged. Simply adding refrigerant without fixing the leak provides only a temporary solution and does not address the underlying problem.
