Behind your drywall, there is a legal but lazy wiring method that causes more mysterious electrical failures during the summer than almost anything else. Let’s talk about "backstabbed" outlets. 🏔️🛠️⚡️

Kris and James here. When houses are built fast, speed is money. To save time, many installers use a feature on the back of standard outlets where you just shove the bare copper wire into a spring-loaded hole instead of wrapping it securely around the side screw. In the trade, we call this "backstabbing."

It passes code inspection on day one, but it's a ticking clock. Here is the quick engineering breakdown of why it fails under summer loads:

The Weak Link: Instead of a heavy-duty screw clamping the wire down, a backstabbed wire is held in place by a tiny, thin piece of internal metal tension.
Thermal Expansion: When you plug in heavy summer appliances—like a portable air conditioner, a bedroom fan, or a dehumidifier—they draw continuous power for hours. That constant electrical flow creates heat. The copper wire expands and contracts, which slowly wears out the tension on that tiny internal spring.

The Failure: Eventually, the connection goes loose. This causes the outlet to randomly stop working, make a faint clicking sound, or cause a domino effect that kills power to half the other outlets in the room. Worse, a loose connection creates electrical arcing, which melts the plastic housing and can start a fire.

Thursday morning on the Front Range. The weekend is officially in sight, and even though it’s still feeling a little chilly out here this morning, we know that June heat is going to peak by the afternoon. Let's talk about why your breakers trip more when it gets hot outside. 🏔️☀️⚡️

Kris and James here. With temperatures climbing across Security-Widefield and the Springs, we get a lot of panicked calls from folks saying, "My AC ran fine all spring, but now the breaker keeps clicking off every afternoon!"

A lot of people assume the appliance is broken. But usually, the culprit is the physics inside your breaker box. Here is a quick lesson on how your panel actually works:

The Bimetallic Strip: Standard circuit breakers don't just detect huge electrical shorts; they also protect against slow overloads using heat. Inside the breaker is a tiny bimetallic strip. As electricity flows through it, the metal naturally warms up. If it gets too hot, the metal bends, triggers the internal spring, and snap—the breaker trips to prevent a fire.

Ambient Heat Matters: Here is the catch—your breaker box doesn't know the difference between the heat caused by your appliances and the heat from the Colorado sun. If your electrical panel is mounted on the sunny side of your house, or inside a baking garage, the temperature inside that box can easily skyrocket.

The Thermal Overload: Because the breaker is already sitting in a super-heated environment, it takes way less electrical current to make that bimetallic strip bend. Your AC might be drawing its normal amount of power, but the ambient heat pushes the breaker over the edge, causing what we call a "thermal trip."
