Dirt Rich Compost and Food Scrap pick up provides food waste pick up for residents and businesses all around the Flathead Valley and provides local farms and gardens with a high quality compost product. We're currently loading up truck and delivering our compost in bulk by appointment Monday, Wednesday and Friday during the work week!

Your decorative pumpkins might be starting to look a little tired, and after this weekend, your jack-o'-lanterns' smiles might be turning to frowns.

Keep them out of the landfill and compost them with Dirt Rich!

How: Please remove all contaminants from pumpkins, such as candles, paint, glitter, stickers, electronics, and plastics.

Where: Drop off at our site in Columbia Falls.

When: Drop-offs will only be accepted on Saturdays and Sundays, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Our site manager will ensure pumpkins are properly processed to help prevent wildlife conflicts.

How Much: Free!

Our site manager, Andrew, just reported that our pile of dropped leaves is growing fast, and we’d love to keep it growing!🍂

Dropped leaves are considered “brown material,” an essential ingredient in our composting process.

Brown material is rich in carbon and, when balanced with “green material,” helps promote efficient decomposition in the compost pile.

Brown material includes sawdust, shredded paper, straw, pine needles, brown leaves, and more.

We typically mix about 60% brown material and 40% green material in our compost piles.

We accept brown leaves for free at our Columbia Falls site, and they can be dropped off any day, at any time!

We're looking for an organized, thoughtful, and tech-savvy person to help keep Dirt Rich Compost running smoothly behind the scenes. This role is a great fit for someone who enjoys variety, likes solving problems, and can comfortably move between customer service, administrative work, technology, and general operations.

We’re excited to highlight our partner, Third Street Market —Whitefish’s oldest downtown corner grocery. And they carry our compost!

We truly appreciate the care the team at Third Street Market puts into offering locally sourced and organic food choices. It’s a-maize-ing to see how many local growers are represented on their shelves.

While we frequent Third Street for groceries, of course, it’s the people who elevate the experience from a chore to a dill-ight. They are excited, knowledgeable, kind, and always a little punny!

Head to Third Street Market and treat yourself to some goodies. Enjoy a chat with your grocer, or that person you know—it’s a small town, after all. And while you’re there, be sure to pick up some Dirt Rich Compost, too!

This week, we finished our final service in Glacier National Park for the season. The estimates are in: during the 2026 season, we composted about 185,838 pounds of material — nearly 100 tons! 🌱

We served six businesses operating in and around both East and West Glacier. We’re proud to have helped these businesses turn their scraps into a resource instead of waste.

A huge thank you to the businesses, staff, and partners who made another season of composting in and around Glacier National Park possible. We’re grateful to be part of it — and already looking forward to next year!

Happy Autumn!

Summer's end is always bittersweet, but we're already making plans for fall planting!

Why plant in fall? Roots! Warm soil and cooler air encourage plants to establish roots now, so they're ready for growth in the spring.

What to plant? Trees, shrubs, perennials, spring-blooming bulbs, garlic, and other plants can all thrive when planted in the fall.

When to plant? Fall planting season runs from September until the ground freezes. Check each plant's ideal planting window for the best results.

Remember the soil! Adding compost to your garden beds in the fall can help improve soil for the season ahead.

We’re excited to highlight our partner, the Center for Native Plants —the Valley’s only retail native plant nursery. And they carry our compost!

We admire the dedication and care the Center puts into growing more than 200 species of native plants. Did you know they responsibly hand-collect seeds for the majority of the plants they grow? It takes a lot to help these plants thrive!

Of course, native plants support all living beings in this environment. What we really love is that they help us feel more connected to the place we call home.

If you haven't had a chance to experience the Center for yourself, we recommend a visit. Ambling around the nursery makes for a delightful afternoon. And while you’re there, be sure to pick up some Dirt Rich Compost, too!

We are excited to offer apple composting this year during September and October!

Curbside Doorstep Customers
-Simply place one extra bucket of apples alongside your regular bucket on your service day.
-Our drivers will flag the extra bucket, and we'll bill you for the additional material on the back end.
-Please only place one extra bucket per service day to ensure we have enough space for everyone's material.

Drop-Off Customers & All Others
-Purchase an Apple Compost Drop-Off through our webshop.
-Plan to drop off your apples at our site in Columbia Falls.
-Drop-offs are available Saturdays and Sundays in September and October, between 9:30–1:30 and 2:00–4:30.
