What if one closed-loop cooling system could support both direct-to-chip and air-side cooling?

Havtech, Shumate Engineering, and BAC tested that approach using the BAC TrilliumSeries® Adiabatic Cooler.

At BAC’s R&D facility, the system was tested across multiple operating conditions to verify it could meet approximately 90°F cooling water requirements for direct-to-chip cooling and 68°F cooling water requirements for air-side cooling.

The design showed:
▪️ Connected PUE of 1.2 or better
▪️ Up to 12% more usable IT power
▪️ Dry cooling operation up to 90% of the year

A different cooling architecture, tested against real operating conditions.

A big thank you to Loren Cook Company for a fantastic factory visit in Springfield, Missouri, and for the world-class hospitality!

Our Pittsburgh team brought Osborn Engineering and the University of Pittsburgh for some hands-on training.

Distance alone may not solve a data center noise problem.

A large data center campus with 72 chillers, each rated at about 96 dB, could produce roughly 115 dB.

At 500 feet, that could drop to about 71 dB if there were nothing around to reflect or redirect the sound.
But real data center campuses don't work that way.

Buildings, reflective surfaces, equipment density, and site layout can all affect the sound level.

Setback distance is only one part of the design.

Before finalizing equipment layout, ask:
Where the sound requirement applies
How acoustical treatment will affect the air path
Whether the structure can support the treatment without limiting service access.

Addressing these questions early gives you more flexibility to balance acoustics, cooling performance, and service access.

Silencers, barriers, and enclosures may reduce data center noise, but they also change how the HVAC system performs.

In one modeled chiller application, adding silencers reduced hot-air recirculation, but airflow dropped about 5%, and total pressure difference increased by roughly 0.17 in. w.g.

Once acoustical treatment enters the air path, it becomes part of the HVAC system.

That means evaluating more than sound levels. Airflow, pressure drop, and recirculation all need to be considered, along with equipment limits, structural support, and service access.

A great day with ASHRAE Region III.

Havtech sponsored this year’s CRC and Presidential Luncheon, where ASHRAE Society Treasurer Wade Conlan shared the 2026 Presidential Theme - Changing the Game: Retrofitting for Resilience.

Air-cleaning technology can look convincing in a product presentation.

The harder question is whether the project team has the documentation needed to specify it confidently.

Before selecting a device for a school HVAC system, verify:

▪️ASHRAE Standard 145.2 or ISO 10121-2 testing for gas-phase pollutant removal
▪️UL 900 certification for fire safety
▪️UL 2998 documentation where applicable
▪️Maintenance and filter-replacement requirements
▪️Compatibility with the existing HVAC system
▪️Performance under expected airflow and operating conditions

Performance claims are only as useful as the documentation behind them.

Missing or incomplete information can lead to permitting questions, added maintenance, project delays, or equipment that doesn’t perform as expected.

This guide explains the standards, documentation, and questions to review before air-cleaning equipment is specified.

The highest-efficiency HVAC option doesn’t automatically produce the lowest long-term cost.

We modeled six electrified HVAC approaches for the same multifamily building using the same assumptions.

The three lowest 15-year present-value costs were:

High-efficiency split-system heat pumps
Air-cooled VRF
Standard-efficiency split-system heat pumps

The totals were close. But each system got there through a different combination of first cost, energy use, maintenance, and available rebates.

And that’s the more useful finding.

Change the building design, ownership period, service strategy, or central plant configuration, and the ranking can change too.

There isn’t one “best” electrification strategy for every multifamily project.

The article compares all six approaches and shows the assumptions behind the results so project teams can use the analysis as a starting point for their own system evaluation.
