Thanksgiving marks the beginning of the Holiday Season and you will find us buzzing about, hand making wreaths, garlands and roping from fresh greenery. The smell of fresh Christmas trees fills the air at Fernwood as both live balled and cut trees are displayed. Choose the perfect poinsettias to create your holiday statement in your home or office. Echinacea, also known as Cone Flower is not only a perennial (comes back year after year) but the parent, or original plant is an area native. With all the beautiful colors now available, the typical 'Purple Cone Flower' almost seems a thing of the past. Whether you choose the oldie but goodie, or one of the new fangled varieties, this plant is a favorite of both birds and wildlife. Butterflies and bees love to collect what's needed for their honey, and in the fall, if you leave some of the dead blooms, the smaller song birdsreally enjoy the seeds. Smaller animals and such will use the basel leaves to take cover in the fall and winter. You will be the hit of the neighborhood.

Liatris is a beautiful tall flower spike with tiny little flowers whirling around the main stalk. This plant is a native to our area, loves sun and can adapt to many soil types. Bloom time is summer, after which, you can enjoy the long slender leaves until the 1st or 2nd heavy frost.
This perennial is great for attracting pollinators of all sorts, and would make a great addition to any garden!

With all the heat and humidity we've been having, you might be seeing some of the 'Flower Pot Parasol' mushrooms (scientifically known as Leucocoprinus birnbaumii) pop up in your pots and landscape. This particular fungi will not harm your plants, as it only feeds on dead organic matter, but is sure does love warm humid spots to call home. Studies have show mixed opinions, but most will tell you it is toxic if ingested. Unfortunately, between the spores spreading easily with a light breeze or something brushing up against them, and the 'fungal network' or mycelium will stay in the soils even you you physically remove the mushroom itself. Think of the Tree of Souls in the book/movie Avatar.
So, they are pretty to look at, not harming your plants, but if you have kiddos or pets, you might want to be safe rather than sorry, and physically remove the mushroom if you see it.
