Welcome Back, Furman University Students!

While you were away this summer, we helped transform a space designed to welcome the next generation of Furman Paladins.

When we first began the project, the Furman Welcome Center had a decidedly dated feel—let’s just say it had a little bit of a “grandma’s living room” vibe. Our goal was to create a space that better reflects Furman University’s culture: warm, welcoming, comfortable, and distinctly Furman.

The redesign opens the space with comfortable seating, stronger connections to natural light, and just the right touch of Furman branding.

The space is nearly ready to welcome prospective students and their families, and we can’t wait to see their excitement when they walk through the doors.

Here’s to a new year of transformative learning—and a transformed Welcome Center to greet the next generation!

Big news!

Our Outdoor Welding Lab for Midlands Technical College is officially out for bid!

Congratulations to Midlands Technical College as they continue to expand one of South Carolina's premier welding programs. This project is all about creating opportunities for the next generation of skilled welders. The new facility will provide students with a hands-on learning environment that better reflects real job-site conditions, allowing them to work together on larger-scale projects while developing the skills today's employers are looking for.

We challenged ourselves to make the most of a pre-engineered metal building, creating a facility that is highly functional, distinctive, and thoughtfully integrated into the MTC campus.

We're excited to see this project move one step closer to becoming a reality, and we can't wait to see students put the space to work.

Past & Present: The War Mouth | 1209 Franklin Street

Since 1946, 1209 Franklin in Columbia’s Cottontown neighborhood was home to Metts & Baker Welding, and later E.W. Metts & Son Welding Works. Generations of the Metts family kept it alive before the building eventually went quiet.

In 2015, Chef Rhett Elliott and Porter Barron Jr. saw its potential and transformed the vacant space into The War Mouth, a beloved neighborhood BBQ & cocktail spot, and one of Columbia’s most iconic restaurants.

Every building has a story — and we’re always honored to help write the next chapter.

From empty warehouse to neighborhood gathering place.

Congratulations to Melrose Market on their recent opening!

It has been a pleasure partnering with the Melrose Market team to transform an empty shell into a vibrant destination for the Columbia community. Seeing the space filled with friends, neighbors, and great conversation is the best part of what we do.

We're grateful to have been part of bringing this vision to life and wish the entire team continued success!

We are excited to share that the Clinton Public Library has received a 2026 Design Honor Award from AIA South Carolina!

Located at the edge of Clinton’s historic downtown, the new 11,000-square-foot library was designed as a highly visible and welcoming civic resource within walking distance for many residents. The new building responds to the scale and character of the surrounding neighborhood while drawing inspiration from the town’s textile and agricultural heritage through low-pitched roofs, standing-seam metal cladding, and a shaded front porch.

Inside, a central atrium, flexible gathering spaces, and strong indoor–outdoor connections create opportunities for learning, gathering, and community engagement. Custom oak benches were fabricated in collaboration with Piedmont Technical College using trees harvested from the site and reinforce the project’s focus on local craftsmanship, participation, and shared civic identity.

We are grateful to the AIA South Carolina jury for this recognition and thankful to our incredible collaborators, including, Studio Shea, Laurens County Public Library System, Thomas & Hutton, Solid Structures, Piedmont Technical College, Clinton Canopy, and the full design team who helped bring this project to life.

We’re honored to share that The Laundry Building has received a 2026 Merit Award for Adaptive Reuse from the AIA South Carolina.

Constructed circa 1883, The Laundry is the oldest surviving service building on the campus of the former South Carolina State Hospital, originally founded in 1821 as the South Carolina Lunatic Asylum and recognized as the nation’s second-oldest public mental institution. Located within the evolving BullStreet District behind the iconic Babcock Building, the two-story, 15,700-square-foot structure once served as part of the operational backbone of the historic campus alongside neighboring service buildings such as the former bakery.

Today, its restoration and adaptive reuse help anchor the continued revitalization of the 181-acre BullStreet District.

We are grateful to share this recognition with our client, Todd Avant, and the entire design and construction team whose collaboration made this project possible. We are also excited that The Laundry will host the upcoming Historic Columbia 50 Forward Preservation Awards Gala on May 14, 2026, celebrating five decades of preservation excellence.
