Garvin Design Group

Garvin Design Group Garvin Design Group is a full service architecture, interiors, and planning firm in South Carolina.

Winner of AIA South Carolina’s prestigious Firm Award in 2019, Garvin Design Group has proudly served the state of South Carolina since 2003. Garvin Design Group commands a portfolio of architecture, interior design, and planning work that includes higher education, multifamily residential, hospitality, K12 education, commercial and retail, and religious project types. Our clients say our commitme

nt to collaborative design, ability to anticipate potential project challenges, and fun-loving attitude make us their go-to design partners. Historic projects and messy renovations are a particular area of expertise for our firm: we have earned more than 24 awards for historic preservation/adaptive reuse. We know firsthand how challenging these projects can be: we designed the comprehensive rehabilitation of Columbia’s historic AIS building (now known as Gervais Place) that now houses our studio and other businesses. Our in-house historic consulting and design services help project teams successfully pursue federal, state, and local tax credits for historic preservation and adaptive reuse. Our firm of 23 people is strategically located in the heart of Columbia’s historic Vista arts and entertainment district but we work all over the state of South Carolina. From the Lowcountry to the Upstate, from small retail upfit projects to major, large-scale historic mill rehabilitation, Garvin Design Group is proud of the role we have played in the state’s continued success.

As Ellie Spicer wraps up her summer internship with us, she and Andrew are reflecting on the impact of both internship and mentorship at GDG. We’ve loved having Ellie’s quick wit, collaborative spirit, and eagerness to take on new challenges in the office this summer. Thank you for choosing GDG, Ellie - we’ve loved having you with us!

Designed to support programs in nursing, public health, exercise science, health administration, recreation and sport management, health sciences, and related fields, CCU's new Health & Human Performance Building creates a dynamic environment for students across different fields of study. Breaking ground soon, this project’s key features include a two-story lobby, a third-floor commons for gathering, and an expansive window wall that fills the interior with natural light.

Swipe for a preview of both the building’s exterior and interior spaces.

Today we welcomed Nicole Kuehner back to Columbia and back to our firm. Originally from Buffalo, New York, and a graduate of Kent State University, Nicole first joined us as an intern last summer. We’re thrilled to have her return as a full-time interior designer. Welcome back, Nicole!

Back-to-school season is here.

As students head back to the classroom, we’re looking back at a project designed to make learning an experience. Hammond School’s Science & Innovation Center brings education to life in experiential spaces that include a 24-foot SciDome, saltwater aquarium, greenhouse, living wall, maker space with 3D printing and laser cutting, flexible STEAM labs, and The Garage, a two-story space designed for experiments, collaboration, and discovery.

Throughout the building, glass walls, flexible classrooms, assembly stairs, exterior learning spaces, and garage doors blur the lines between the classroom and the world beyond. This project earned Merit Awards from AIA South Carolina and AIA Greater Columbia, along with an IIDA Carolinas DesignWorks Honorable Mention in Education.

Here’s to another school year filled with curiosity, creativity, and hands-on learning.

You'll want to save this post for a future before-and-after.

Distinctive details like the entry plaque and clerestory survive at this mid-century armory in Seneca, SC. Our ongoing work here is rehabilitating the facility for the South Carolina State Guard’s training, ballistics storage, and administrative operations while preserving its historic character. We worked closely with the State Historic Preservation Office to preserve the building's character-defining features that help tell its story.

Summer weather may be unpredictable, but great design keeps camp in session.

Designed to support Camp Cole's mission of creating a camp for all, the Southeastern Freight Lines Activity Center provides 20,000 square feet of flexible, accessible space where campers can seamlessly transition indoors when summer storms roll in. From the central "Artnasium" to dedicated spaces for art, movement, reading, and sensory play, every detail was thoughtfully designed to foster inclusion, creativity, and connection.

Rain or shine, this building ensures the magic of camp never has to pause.
