INSANELY cool! Scientists have captured something that had only ever been theorized before.

During a thunderstorm, researchers observed purple sparks shooting from the tops of trees. These faint electrical discharges, known as corona discharges, happen when the electric field in the air becomes extremely strong just before or during lightning.

Meteorologists at Penn State were able to document the phenomenon using specialized ultraviolet cameras, which can detect energy that the human eye normally canโ€™t see.

For years, scientists suspected this was happening during storms, but this is the first time it has actually been recorded. ๐ŸŒฉ๏ธโœจ

You may need to get the hummingbird feeders ready early this year!

Bird watchers along the Gulf Coast
are reporting ruby-throated hummingbirds
arriving about 3 weeks earlier than usual.

That puts them in Missouri & Kansas in March!

Let's keep them fueled up for their winter vacation. They'll be back!

Hummingbirds usually start migrating south from late July through early October. Males lead the way, often traveling in waves to stay safe. During August and September, you might notice them refueling at feeders in the early morning and flying during the day as they head toward their winter homes in Central America or Mexico.

If you live in cooler areas like the Northeast, Midwest, or interior West, the last hummingbirds may leave your backyard sometime in the fall.

Wait until the last hummingbird has truly left before removing your feeder. If you take it down too early, the birds might find another feeder and skip yours next year. We recommend keeping feeders full and out until the first frost, which usually happens in mid to late October in northern and central Missouri.

Once freezing weather arrives, itโ€™s safe to take down your feeder. Donโ€™t forget to empty any leftover nectar, clean it well, dry it completely, and store it in a cool, dry place for next season.

Happy birdwatching! ๐ŸŒธโœจ

Poison hemlock is blooming and producing seeds in Missouri, posing a serious threat to livestock.

โ–ช๏ธMowing is the best method to manage it, especially in pastures and roadsides.
โ–ช๏ธSpot-spraying with glyphosate or growth-regulator herbicides can work, but be careful not to harm desirable forage.
โ–ช๏ธAlways wear protective gear when mowing or spraying to avoid pollen exposure.

Non-chemical methods like hand-pulling and regular mowing can also help prevent this toxic plant's establishment.

Every part of the poison hemlock plant is toxic, so keep livestock, especially pregnant animals, away to prevent serious health risks.
