There’s not much more to say other than to thank every one of you for your support of what we do. It takes your trust and dedication to commit to the projects we work on for you. And while it may seem to some like just a drop in the bucket to plant one native species- the evidence tells us a different story. The moment we plant something that is in support of our ecosystem the species we need to survive on this planet appear before our eyes. The same is true when we remove something that is interfering with the plants these species rely on. You begin to see in real time that nature needs us back! Can you believe this is the same yard? In the first image we started with soooo many shrubs that provided no real excitement or life. Now we have a blend of native and non-native species which have been thoughtfully selected to bring life back into the space while also providing a design and plant palette that aligned with the clients tastes! These layered planting techniques create micro-climates perfect for small reptiles, moths, beetles and perfect for people as well. Plant for shade, plant for texture, plant for diversity and plant for joy!

Do you enjoy working outdoors, learning about plants, and helping create landscapes that support both people and nature?

Front Yard Forest is looking for a gardener/landscaper to join our team in Columbia, SC. This is a hands-on position that includes garden maintenance, planting, pruning, habitat restoration, plant identification, and ecological landscaping.

We’re looking for someone who:
🌱 Enjoys physical outdoor work
🌱 Takes direction with ease and asks questions when needed
🌱 Has basic knowledge of pruning, weeding, and plant identification
🌱 Takes pride in producing clean, high-quality work
🌱 Enjoys being part of a small, collaborative team

This is a seasonal position (6–7 months) with the potential to become a full-time role. Pay is based on experience.

Get to know Rabbiteye Blueberry.

This native fruiting shrub grows naturally across the Southeast and handles the heat and humidity of Columbia landscapes with ease.

The name “rabbiteye” comes from the way the berries turn pink before ripening to deep blue.

Once fully ripe, the fruit becomes sweet and flavorful and has long been gathered as a seasonal food.

Plant two rabbiteye blueberry cultivars nearby so they can cross-pollinate and produce good fruit set.

In edible gardens and food forests, rabbiteye blueberries work well as an understory fruit shrub, producing early summer harvests while also supporting pollinators and birds.

Rabbiteye blueberries grow especially well in sunny areas with acidic soil and make a beautiful addition to edible landscapes and woodland edges.

Native fruiting plants like this support wildlife while bringing seasonal harvests into the landscape.

Eloy Platenberg, founder and lead ecological designer at Front Yard Forest, will be presenting alongside Bailey Parker of Gills Creek Watershed Association and Leonora Dillon of Columbia Water at Blue Thumb Landscaper Home’s presentation on Working With Your Water in Mind this Saturday April 25th at 9:00AM - 12:30PM.

Front Yard Forest will be diving into how home gardeners and landscapers can adopt more sustainable approaches to water catchment. Naturally designing native sustainable systems into the landscape and integrating supportive elements like rain chains and dry creek beds.

We can simplify our approach to our gardens and outdoor spaces. By working with natural elements and creating supportive pathways for water to flow in an intuitive yet strategic way, you can save time, money, and unnecessary headaches.

Nature is inherently collaborative. Sometimes, it simply takes a bit more education to gain a broader perspective on how to work with it in an intentional and supportive way.

This native grass grows naturally across South Carolina and handles the heat and humidity of Columbia landscapes with ease.

🌸 In early fall, the plant produces airy pink blooms that look almost like a soft cloud hovering above the grass.

When planted in groups, the effect can be striking.

Every plant has a place, and every property has a natural flow.

This install was designed to work with the land, not against it. We shaped simple stone waterways to guide water along the natural contours of the property, allowing it to move, soak in, and support the plants long term.

The result is a system that holds moisture where it’s needed, reduces runoff, and creates a landscape that can sustain itself with minimal maintenance over time.

Thoughtful placement. Intentional design. Long-term health.

This is what it looks like to build a landscape that functions as well as it feels to chill out in and enjoy.
