Ground has officially been broken for the new Welcome Center at The Dawes Arboretum in Newark, Ohio!

This groundbreaking marks an important milestone for the Arboretum as its first significant building project in over 45 years. Members of the Dawes family, Board of Trustees, current and former employees, project team members from MA Design and Robertson Construction as well as members of the community gathered today to celebrate the start of this exciting new chapter.

The design for the new two-story Welcome Center was developed in close collaboration with Dawes and Owner’s Representative and Board of Trustees member Gerry Bird. The building will include an exhibit hall, café, expanded retail space, community meeting rooms, and outdoor terraces and porches that extend the visitor experience into the surrounding landscape.

From its orientation and architectural character to its materials and connection to the site, the design reflects Dawes’ longstanding commitment to conservation, learning and connecting people with nature.

We’re proud to celebrate this milestone alongside everyone helping bring the Welcome Center to life!

Environmental graphics can do more than enhance the look of your workplace. When thoughtfully integrated into the environment, they can help people navigate with confidence, bring your brand and culture to life, and support how employees and visitors experience the space every day.

In our latest blog, Alicia Orlando, Director - Experiential Design, explores three ways environmental graphics can support both your brand and your operations.

Science has confirmed that being exposed to nature or organic materials not only calms our minds, it can contribute to a sense of health and well-being.🌿

That connection is at the heart of biophilic design—bringing elements, patterns and experiences of the natural world into the built environment. Across workplaces, healthcare, residential and higher education spaces, we use biophilic design to create environments that support well-being, comfort and the inherent human need to connect with nature within the modern built environment.

How do you create a stronger sense of belonging in a learning environment?

Through environmental graphics that tell an institution's story and connect students to its mission.

For a classroom renovation project at the Riffe Building for The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy, MA Design developed an experiential graphics program that focused on integrating branding, storytelling, and a cohesive donor recognition system into the space to create a modern, student-centered learning environment inspired by the College’s history and future. The result is a thoughtful environment that reflects the College’s identity and mission while enhancing the overall student experience.

For the new Welcome Center at The Dawes Arboretum, several of the interior wood elements will be crafted from trees that naturally fell on the arboretum grounds. Rather than letting those trees go to waste, Dawes mills and stores the wood on site for future use. Our design team had the opportunity to hand-select timbers that will become part of spaces within the new center.

Reusing materials from the site is more than a sustainable design choice. It preserves a tangible connection to the arboretum itself, giving trees that have long been part of the landscape a new purpose within the welcome center. The result is spaces that reflects the character and history of the land while creating a warm, authentic experience for every visitor.
