The Schooley Caldwell team toured one of our soon-to-be-finished projects, the Ohio Village!

The Ohio Village was originally a replica of a Civil War-era town, intended to move forward in time as decades passed. The village is currently receiving its updated makeover to the mid-1920s, with new landscaping, a new town center with a gazebo, and a new beer garden. It will become both a place for events and a look at the old history of a time before smartphones and the internet. The Ohio Village was temporarily open to the public during the State Fair, giving people a glimpse of what is to come!

And of course, after the tour, we all enjoyed a nice happy hour at the Yellow Springs Brewery!

The Bicentennial Barn in McCammon Creek Park has reached a big milestone!

Last week was the official ribbon-cutting for the barn! Operators for the Preservation Parks of Delaware County (PPDC), along with state and county officials, all came together to celebrate this exciting event. The Bicentennial Barn is one of 88 historic barns memorializing Ohio's bicentennial in 2003.

The barn was strategically relocated within the park and will now function as an event center. Our addition to the barn houses a catering kitchen for events, along with offices, restrooms, and storage. The barn will be available for event rental next year, and we are excited to see this historic place serve as a new feature of Delaware County parks.

The Observation Tower at the Great Council State Park is coming along!

The Observation Tower is a new signature feature for the park and will neighbor the Interpretive Center, offering a sweeping view of the surrounding landscape and a visual understanding of the park's relationship to the Little Miami River. The design is guided by a deep respect for the site’s archaeological and historical significance, particularly its connection to the Shawnee people, whose ancestral homeland the park commemorates.

The tower will also be receiving two adjacent facilities: a public restroom and a maintenance building, to support the growing needs of park visitors and staff. Please keep an ear out for the continued progress of this symbolic landmark.

We're so excited to welcome Mason Cessna, our newest Designer, to the Schooley Caldwell team!

Mason earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a concentration in Printmaking from Colorado State University. After graduation, he gained experience roofing and preserving a historic elementary school in eastern Oregon. He then went on to work as a handyman while also curating and installing at an art gallery. Mason's creative experiences paired with a passion for construction led him to pursue a Master of Architecture degree from the Knowlton School at OSU.

Mason's practice in the process-heavy medium of printmaking has helped define his architectural design process. Also, working first-hand as a contractor has given him a deeper appreciation for how buildings come together. His diverse background and skillsets shape the fresh perspective he brings to the office.

Outside of work, Mason loves to ride his bicycle long distances, fix bicycles for friends, work on his 1913 home, and go on long walks with his partner.

We're thrilled to share the completed renovation of the Perry County Courthouse in New Lexington, Ohio -- an 1887 Richardsonian Romanesque gem designed by Joseph Yost, now restored to its historic prominence and adapted for modern judicial life.

Swipe for the before & afters of the second-floor courtroom!

The second-floor courtroom retained its historic volume and many original features over the decades, so our job was to let them shine again. We restored the faux-graining to its original appearance, revived the gilded plaster frames along the perimeter walls, brought back the decorative metal ceiling, and restored the original light fixtures.

The Ohio Village at the Ohio History Center is showing strong construction progress!

The project includes a new town square anchored by a new bandstand to support events and programming. A new stable house will include public restrooms, thoughtfully integrating necessary facilities within the historic architectural context of the village. A new brick-paved biergarten, adjacent to the new stable house and existing hotel and tavern, includes a new heavy timber pavilion located at the rear for live performances and gatherings. The village boasts new brick and historic asphalt streets while the connecting road, meandering through the "Hinterlands," is designed to resemble a dirt path, reinforcing the site’s historic rural and urban character and enhancing the connection between the History Center and the Village.

What an evening! We were honored to attend the ribbon-cutting at the historic Ro-Na Theatre in Ironton, Ohio. It's a project we're incredibly proud to have been part of!

Built in 1949, the Ro-Na is a beloved community landmark. Our team led the renovation to restore its historic character while transforming it into a fully modern, accessible cultural center. The main floor has been leveled so Ro-Na can host any kind of event, and the theatre now has an enlarged stage, new sound and lighting, ADA-accessible restrooms, and new balcony seating.

This is what it's all about: honoring the past while creating something the community can use and enjoy for years to come.

We had a great time at Preservation Parks of Delaware County's "Wild About Wandering" fundraising gala at the Africa Center at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium!

A highlight of the night was the announcement that the Bicentennial Barn is nearing completion, with a grand opening and open house scheduled for August 22nd. We're proud to be part of the project and can't wait to see it open to the community.

The evening was a great showcase of Preservation Parks' vision for their park system and all the new ways they're creating for people to get out and enjoy nature.

Joining the Schooley Caldwell team for our summer internship is Jacob Newcomer!

Jacob is from Stow, Ohio. He is set to receive his Bachelor of Science in Architecture degree at Kent State University in the spring of 2027. Following the completion of his undergraduate studies, Jacob intends to pursue his Master of Architecture and later acquire licensure.

At Kent, Jacob has received multiple awards for his design studio work, including the Second-Year Award of Excellence in Design and Most Inspiring Student Project awards in his second and third years. He also enjoys getting involved in student extracurriculars, as he is an active member in Kent’s AIAS and APX Student Organization chapters. He has a deep passion for architecture and its collaborative nature.

Outside of work, Jacob continues his studies in architectural theory and refines his digital design skills in Rhino3D, Grasshopper, and Revit. You can also find him playing basketball with friends, sketching tattoo designs, and listening to music albums from his favorite artists.
