On this Memorial Day, we reflect upon and honor the sacrifice of our fallen service members.

Pictured is Huntington Chapel at Green Lawn Cemetery in Columbus. Green Lawn is the final resting place of over 6,000 U.S. Veterans, including five Medal of Honor recipients. In 1891, the Soldiers and Sailors Monument was erected at the site in remembrance of Civil War veterans.

Our crew is currently restoring the chapel’s dome, replacing the stained-glass skylight and restoring the copper to its historically accurate design. This restoration preserves the chapel’s history and honors the legacy of those who are buried there.

To wrap up , we're highlighting a few more team members who represent the growth, skill, and dedication that define our Apprenticeship Program.

First, Hayden Krull with Durable Slate Columbus. Hayden is one of the newest members of the team and came to Durable after working with one of our longtime clients, the Columbus Diocese.

Hayden has shared that his experience so far has been extremely positive, and he’s already gaining valuable, hands-on skills through the Apprenticeship Program.

We’re also recognizing Paul Osterloh and Wolfgang Barth from our Midwest restoration team, who recently completed their SPRAT Level 1 certification. This achievement allows them to perform rope access work under the supervision of Level 2 and Level 3 technicians and expands the capabilities of our team in specialized access work.

Both Paul and Wolfgang have contributed to award-winning projects, including Heinz Memorial Chapel and the Logan County Courthouse, and continue to demonstrate a strong commitment to craftsmanship and professional growth.

Finally, we’re spotlighting Ben Wimmers from the Cincinnati team. After three years with Durable, Ben has completed all of his coursework for the Slate Mechanic Level of the Apprenticeship Program and is close to finishing his field proficiencies.

He recently worked on the Wiedemann Hill Mansion in Newport, Kentucky, a property listed on the National Register of Historic Places, where his skills continue to develop on meaningful, preservation-focused work.

It’s been great to highlight the progress and dedication of our apprentices this week. Thank you to everyone who took part in celebrating National Apprenticeship Week and supporting the continued growth of our teams!

Kollin has been with Durable since 2023 and has already made strong progress through our Apprenticeship Program. He recently completed his Laborer Level and is now beginning work toward his Slate Mechanic Level, continuing to build his skills in traditional slate roofing.

Since joining the team, Kollin has shown a great attitude and commitment to learning the craft. His steady progress and willingness to take on new challenges are exactly what our apprenticeship program is all about.

First up are brothers Concepcion and Rudys Villatoro with our Mid-Atlantic restoration team! With over 20 years of experience in construction each, they are both highly skilled masons who specialize in the expert laying of brick, block and stone. Their vast knowledge also extends to restoration, repointing and stone repair.

Concepcion has contributed to some of our major restoration projects in the Maryland/DC area, such as the George Widrick House and the Maryland State House Grounds. Concepcion’s precision and dedication allow him to consistently deliver exceptional craftsmanship. Rudys has also worked on many historic buildings, including the Maryland State House Grounds and the Officer’s Quarters at Ft. McNair. Rudys’ passion for excellence and ongoing skill development ensures superior results in every project. Currently, both are working at Sully Historic Site, repointing the brownstone Dairy building.

Recently, Concepcion and Rudys were both on the crew of six masons recognized at the Washington Building Congress Craftsmanship Awards for their work at the Old Treasury Building in Annapolis.

NRCA's 2026 Roofing Day in D.C. was a success!

We engaged with roofing professionals from around the country and had a rare opportunity to meet with members of Congress to raise awareness about issues within our industry.

To wrap it all up, we hosted a historical architecture walk at Capitol Hill, led by Preservation Director Julie Butler.
