We lost part of our family this week. Steve Moore, our crane operator, passed away.

Steve was with Timber Ridge Tree Care for eight years. He was the guy who answered the phone at 2 a.m. when a tree came through somebody’s roof — storm, rain, cold, didn’t matter. He’d be in the seat, lights on, getting it off the house so a family could go back inside.

You could always rely on Steve. He worked hard, put in the extra effort without anyone asking, and he was careful — which matters more than anything when you’re running a crane over somebody’s house in the dark. Talented operator, and not just on the crane. He could run about anything at our facility and run it well.

He was also just a good guy. Friendly, thoughtful, and great with our customers — people remembered him. There are folks in West Michigan who don’t know his name but slept in their own homes because of him.
Steve was an asset to this company and a friend to everyone here. He will be greatly missed.
Our thoughts are with his family.

🍁 Your Trees Are Stressed Right Now — Here’s What You Can Do About It

Canadian wildfire smoke has been blanketing West Michigan for several days. If you’re seeing healthy green leaves on your driveway or sidewalk in the middle of July, your trees may be telling you something is wrong.

This isn’t fall.

This isn’t normal.

This is stress-induced leaf drop, and we’re seeing it across multiple tree species, including maples and oaks.

What the Smoke Is Actually Doing to Your Trees

Wildfire smoke isn’t just unpleasant for people—it affects trees, too.

Fine smoke particles settle on leaves and can interfere with the tiny pores, called stomata, that trees use to breathe, regulate water, and take in carbon dioxide for photosynthesis.

Ground-level ozone, which often increases during smoke events, can damage leaf tissue from the inside out. Many common Michigan trees, including maples and oaks, are sensitive to ozone.

Reduced sunlight from smoky skies means trees produce less energy. When a tree can’t produce enough energy to support all of its leaves, it may begin shedding healthy green leaves as a survival strategy.

Add several days of heat, and trees begin experiencing multiple environmental stressors at the same time.

What Homeowners Can Do Right Now

✅ Water deeply if the soil is dry. Water slowly around the drip line—the area beneath the outer edge of the canopy—not directly against the trunk.

✅ Apply 3–4 inches of organic mulch around the root zone while keeping mulch away from the trunk flare. Mulch helps conserve moisture and moderate soil temperatures.

✅ Avoid unnecessary pruning. Pruning creates additional stress and should generally wait until the tree has recovered unless there is an immediate safety concern.

✅ Consider professional deep root treatments. A properly formulated deep root injection with elevated potassium and essential micronutrients can help support root function and improve a tree’s ability to respond to environmental stress.

Watch for Warning Signs

Most healthy trees should recover as air quality improves.

However, consider having your trees evaluated if you notice:

• Continued heavy green leaf drop over several days

• Branch dieback beginning at the tips

• Leaves that wilt and fail to recover overnight

• Bark discoloration or developing cankers

For oak trees, remember that smoke-related stress can sometimes resemble other problems. Oak Wilt typically causes a distinct pattern of branch-by-branch decline rather than uniform leaf drop across the canopy.

Our Recommendation

Trees are one of the largest long-term investments on your property.

The sooner environmental stress is recognized, the better the chances of minimizing long-term damage.

If your trees are showing signs of decline, an ISA Certified Arborist can determine whether they’re simply responding to temporary environmental conditions or whether another issue is contributing to the problem.

If you’ve noticed healthy green leaves falling from your trees this week, I’d love to hear what you’re seeing. Leave a comment below so others across West Michigan can compare what they’re experiencing.

Stay safe, stay hydrated, and don’t forget that your trees are feeling this weather too.

150 years of history. Gone in a morning — but done right.

This week, Timber Ridge Tree Care was called to one of Cascade’s premier country clubs to carefully remove a massive white oak that had stood for a century and a half. A crack in the trunk made it a risk they couldn’t ignore.

Jobs like this don’t leave room for mistakes. With manicured greens, underground infrastructure, and a tight cart path as our only access, every cut and every lift had to be precise. Our crane operator Steve threaded the needle all morning — not a divot out of place.

That’s exactly what we do.

Great review from Frank... "High atop the swaying pines where Michigan winds blow,
The crew of Timber Ridge arrives to help the garden grow.
With ropes and saws and steady hands, they climb the rugged bark,
Ensuring every leafy limb leaves a healthy mark.
They handle oaks with heavy crowns and maples reaching wide,
Taking every safety step with professional pride.
From pruning back the overgrowth to clearing storm-tossed debris,
They understand the silent soul of every ancient tree.
The Art of the Cut
Precision is their guiding light in everything they do,
Transforming tangled, dying woods into a clearer view.
They balance weight and gravity with calculated grace,
Leaving not a single branch out of its proper place.
Tree Removal: Safe takedowns in the tightest spots.
Expert Trimming: Shaping growth for years to come.
Stump Grinding: Erasing scars from the grassy earth.
When the sky turns dark and heavy and the summer gales howl,
The Ridge is on the front lines when the weather starts to growl.
They clear the drive and save the roof before the sun can rise,
A testament to honest work beneath the northern skies.
No job is deemed too daunting, no trunk is far too tall,
They answer nature’s urgent plea and catch the timber's fall.
With sawdust on their heavy boots and spirits soaring high,
They keep the canopy alive against the azure sky.
So if your woodland needs a hand or a cedar needs a trim,
Trust the team that knows the weight of every sturdy limb.
Timber Ridge is standing by with sharpened steel and heart,
To turn the chore of property care into a work of art."
