Color Up

Color Up Hello. My name is Carla I am 63, retired on a fixed income, and I live with my 2 young adult children. Luke is the oldest at 24. He has autism. An idea was born.

He loves people, is extremely intelligent, enjoys drawing and being helpful. We have searched for quite some time for a way for him to work, meet local people, and stay physically active, while allowing me to do the same. Last year I grew a very large vegetable garden to help make ends meet. I quickly learned that while I enjoy veggie gardening, I LOVE growing flowers. I got to work over the winte

r researching and learning everything we needed to know to get started. We now maintain a 3000 sqft flower garden, learning as we "grow." Later in the season we plan on opening our garden to those who would like to come and cut their own bouquets - although this is still a plan in progress. If you pass Sheetz in Concord, going towards Appomattox, look to your right and down the hill. If you see a lot of color and would like to come snip some blooms, DM me here and we can set up a time!

I wanted to pop in and let you all know I am still here but while I had hoped to garden just a bit and have some flowers, caretaker life has been quite challenging and time/energy consuming. The hope is that next year I will be back.

In the meantime, while I sit with my charge, I am teaching myself watercolor and sketching. When I am back out and about I will have a nice selection of original and original print cards and gift tags to go with your flowers.
If you are interested you can follow my journey on Tumblr.

Hey everyone!!! I found a little time to putter in the garden. I cut a few flowers to offer to you. If anyone would like a bouquet, please message me. I will need a couple of hours as I am not pre-assembling at this time.

These will need to be picked up at my residence as I am unable to take my charge out and about.
I am located directly next to Sheetz in Concord.

Dear friends and valued customers,

I wanted to share a quick update about this growing season. If you have been watching the garden down the hill, you will have seen that I am very slow out of the gate this year. There is a family member who needs my full time care and am finding it challenging to find time for my flowers. I will not be able to maintain a large garden or have regular sale days on the corner as I did last year. I am saddened by this as seeing your smiling faces was always the highlight of my week. However, I will still be growing a smaller garden and offering a limited selection of pre-made fresh bouquets which I will post as they become available. I may be able to deliver for a small fee depending on my schedule and the distance. Most may be picked up by appointment.

The season will be spent quietly, increasing the fertility and life in my soil, retrofitting a trailer for the flowers for next year, (ooh that will be fun!) and caring for my family.

Thank you all for your continued support. I am encouraged by last year’s overwhelmingly positive response and will come out swinging as soon as I am able. If you see me puttering in the garden as you pass, give a little honk! It makes my day.

P.S. I am hoping to have a large flush of flowers for Mother's day weekend and I have help so that I can bring them out to the corner. Stay tuned!

Hi everyone. I have a request. I am trying to source wool for an early spring project for you. If you have an old, ruined wool sweater/blanket etc. that you are willing to part with I will return your kindness with a free arrangement/bouquet of your choosing next season.

If you are close by, I will come to you.

Photo is from March 2025. We should have these daffs this coming spring!

Pictures for attention: well it seems our season is over. If you have watched the shenanigans in the garden you probably saw my attempts to protect the remaining flowers from the arctic blast. I was actually successful. Go me!

However.

This has been my first year with my cooler. It has behaved beautifully. It lives in my basement. It seems though, that when the temperature drops down there, the cooler drops too. I didn't have my sensor alert on and while the outside flowers survived, The 2 full buckets in the cooler froze just enough to bend the necks... and they are done. Sigh.

This is a very long-winded way of saying that our season is now closed. What a wonderful year. Many, many thanks to everyone who supported us. It truly meant the world to be so well received and to meet such lovely people.

I won't be too quiet though, it's time to shift to my winter work. Mobiles and garden prep for next year.

First flowers should be fancy schmancy daffodils!!
