The forest’s location and special ecological distinctiveness makes it one of the region’s unique resources for showcasing research and demonstration in urban forestry issues, environmental education, atmospheric studies, and a host of other opportunities with tomorrow’s leaders, improving communities’ health and outdoor nature connections, and connecting diverse community members to the benefits o

f natural resource conservation through continuing education. Jones State Forest is a working forest owned and administered by the Texas A&M Forest Service. The forest was purchased in 1926 to establish a research/demonstration area in the heart of one of the richest timber producing areas of the state to educate landowners, loggers, and forestry students about what is now termed sustained yield forestry—the ability of a forested ecosystem to balance the utilization of natural resources, habitat enrichment for native flora and fauna, with quality human experience. At a ceremony on May 19, 1949, the forest was formally dedicated and renamed the William Goodrich Jones State Forest, in honor of the Father of Forestry in Texas, Mr.

What a great afternoon here at W.G. Jones State Forest! 🌲
The Woodlands G.R.E.E.N.'s Junior Urban Naturalists Club visit was a big hit.
GREEN Team member Stephanie brought her awesome knowledge of rocks and minerals, and we all enjoyed a creekside walk to discover local agate, quartz, and petrified wood. Lots of smiles out on the trail today!
Thanks to everyone who came out and for The Woodlands G.R.E.E.N. for leading this event. We loved having you here!

Friendly reminder to our W.G. Jones State Forest Visitors!
We’re grateful to see so many people enjoying the forest, but we need your help keeping it safe, clean, and protected for everyone, including the wildlife that lives here. Recently, we’ve seen an increase in unauthorized motor vehicle use, UAV/drone activity, and improper waste disposal.

Please remember to follow all State Forest Visitor Guidelines while on the property:
• No unauthorized motorized vehicles. ATVs, UTVs, dirt bikes, and other motorized vehicles are not permitted on forest lands.
• UAVs/drones are prohibited. This is to protect sensitive habitat, including that of the red‑cockaded woodpecker.
• Pack out all trash, including dog waste bags.
• Pets must remain leashed at all times.
• Do not collect plants, animals, firewood, or other natural resources without written permission.
• No campfires, camping, or target shooting without proper authorization.
• Forest hours are dawn to dusk, seven days a week.
• No alcohol is allowed on state forest lands.

Texas A&M Forest Service representatives may ask anyone violating these guidelines to leave the property.

If you are unsure whether an activity is allowed, please contact us:
Conroe District Office
Office Hours: Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
Email: [email protected]
Phone: (936) 273‑2261
If you see visitors who are not following forest guidelines, first of all, be kind and, if you feel comfortable, direct them to the Texas State Forest Visitor Guidelines.

Let’s work together to respect the forest and maintain this wonderful resource for our community!

Happy Thanksgiving, Y'all! 🦃🌲

🍂🦃 Happy Thanksgiving! 🍁🌳

Today, we reflect on the many things we're thankful for - one of which is trees, the health benefits they provide, and products they create! What are you thankful for this year?

Fallen leaves have many benefits to our ecosystem when left alone but can also become a wildfire hazard if they remain in the wrong places. Which creates the question, what should we do with them?

The key to leaves around your home is finding the balance between removing and leaving them.

To help protect your home from wildfires, leaves should be removed from the first five feet – usually the gutters, the garden beds that touch the home and where leaves gather up against wooden fences and wooden decks.

For the rest of your yard, the best thing to do is leave the leaves where they fall. This mimics the natural setting of a forest. Over time, leaves break down and become beneficial organic material and provide food and shelter to many insects and organisms.
