Here's something that doesn't get talked about enough: biodiversity and water quality are a package deal.

Healthy, biodiverse ecosystems — forests, wetlands, streamside vegetation — act as natural filtration and flood-control systems. And healthy water, in turn, supports the fish, amphibians, insects, and plants that make up a thriving ecosystem.

When one suffers, the other usually does too. But the reverse is also true — protecting and restoring biodiversity is one of the most effective ways to improve water quality over the long term.

Not every animal’s name describes its appearance, but when it comes to the Red-headed Woodpecker, the name says it all. Other woodpeckers such as the Red-bellied Woodpecker and Pileated Woodpecker also have noticeable red heads – so what sets this species apart?

As adults, these medium-sized birds are distinguished by their large, rounded red head and powerful spike-like bill. Their backs are black, they have white wing patches with a solid white belly, and a short, stiff tail. While they use their stabby bills to hammer out insects, these woodpeckers also catch insects in flight and hunt for them on the ground. They round out their diet with fruit and seeds.

If you’re looking for one of these colorful birds, you’re in luck. They can be seen in a variety of habitats, including open forests with clear understories, as well as agricultural land and wetlands.

When we talk about clean water, we often think about drinking water, but for many threatened and endangered species, water quality is a matter of survival.

Freshwater mussels, native trout, and amphibians like hellbenders and salamanders need clean, cool, oxygen-rich water to live and reproduce. When runoff, sediment, or pollution degrade that water, these species are often hit first and hardest.

Freshwater ecosystems are home to some of the most at-risk species on Earth, and protecting water quality is one of the most powerful things we can do to help them recover.
