Heat stress in turf is causing stress for many homeowners in this region. The higher temperatures we experienced in June caused stress in the root systems of many turfs. Water is a critical factor in a healthy turf. When roots dry, it causes dieback. Once that dieback happens the heat does not allow the rhizomes to fill the gaps in the turf causing dead spots. The only cure for heat stress is increased water. Fortunately, the recent rain (along with ArtScape fertilizer) should help fill in the gaps and bring the turf back to a healthy state. Any additional water from sprinklers can help as well. To help prevent stress in the future, consider aeration at the beginning of summer. This will loosen the soil and make the dirt more porous and able to retain the water the turf does receive, thus hopefully preventing turf heat stress. Please contact ArtScape for more information.
