Gardener alert! - garlic mustard (Alliaria petiolata) has bolted and is flowering on my property. It won’t be long now before copious seeds are set and start exploding from pods. NOW is the time to scout for flowering garlic mustard and kill it any way you can. See my latest blog post http://campbelllandscape.com/2-key-strategies-in-the-war-with-weeds for information you can put to use in your own natural landscaping efforts.

Hi. Still getting the hang of this "social media" thing! Anyway, was thinking of self-sowing plants as I surveyed the gardens this AM. Among the many on my site that self-sow heavily (for good and bad) are Columbine, all the Heuchera and Northern Sea Oats. Wondering what others have that self-sow, perhaps more than expected (for better or worse)??

We have an ideal window for late winter pruning of woodies; dry, warm and warming. I like to wait until later for some species that "bleed" a lot, like Nyssa, Carpinus, and most Acer (but it's not critical). So sharpen up those pruners!

The birds don't know the date! A pair of bluebirds were checking out some of the next boxes on my property today. Talk about early.

I've been thinking about winter pruning lately. The early spring-like temps have tempted me to get to my annual pruning; however I know it's still a bit early as extreme cold temps can damage fresh pruning cuts. The rather cold past couple of nights has been a good reminder of why it's best to hold off another week or 2.

Ice Patterns. Here's a suprising benefit of having a pond - these patterns appeared in the ice of my backyard pond a few days ago. Just for fun I manipulated the colors to enhance the intrigueing patterns

While the prose may be a bit dry, the author of this article from one of my trade magazines, does a terrific job of summing up my firmly held beliefs about soil, land care, plant selection and more. It's about much more than trees...
