Here’s a sneak peak of our latest project in Oneonta, NY.

We have very efficient installation processes from years of experience. We follow a very specific sequence of work for every type of system we install. However, last week when we noticed the high temperatures coming this week we decided to call an audible and adjust to get half of the system up and running half way through the project. We worked hard yesterday to get this new attic air handler and duct system up and running for our appreciative customers to enjoy a cool and comfortable night.

Meet the Founder!

Pioneer Energy Solutions is a dream that started back in 2014, but the dream grew from a seed that was planted much earlier than that. Growing up in Cooperstown, NY, Kevin Segit always had a passion for understanding how things work and how to make them work better. Kevin's very first experience with HVAC was at age 13 when a repair was needed on his family's oil furnace and he was just the kid for the job.

Kevin had a deep passion for athletics and competition and participated in 4 varsity sports at Cooperstown High School including Football, Wrestling, Baseball, and Track. Kevin's higher education began in the field of exercise science at Springfield College with a goal of specializing in Kinesiology. This would combine the passion of sports performance with the lifelong interest in physics and deeper understanding of how things move and how they work. It is at Springfield College where Kevin and a dorm mate, Jared, began to discuss and share their interest in sustainability and renewable energy. About this time, Kevin was home on break going through old belongings and uncovered old childhood toys that were all alike - "Build you own robot". "Build your own electrical circuit", "Engineering kit for kids" were a few of his old favorites and that's when the decision was made to change course for renewable energy engineering.

The next chapter in Kevin's education was a dual degree path at SUNY Canton where Kevin would earn a Bachelors in Sustainable Technologies - an engineering accredited program, and an Associates in Electrical Engineering. Of the many renewable energy systems Kevin studied, one stood out above the rest - Heat Pumps. The efficiency and economics of heat pump technology stands in a class of it's own. Kevin understands this and has committed a lifelong career to pursuing excellence in the industry of heat pumps and high efficiency HVAC.

Is “Dual Fuel” right for you?

PES recently completed a new installation of a dual fuel heating and cooling system. This home is under renovations and the existing oil furnace was no longer operable so an upgrade was needed, but what’s the best solution?

A gas furnace would offer a large capacity heat source that is very forgiving for an older home where insulation and windows currently fall short of ideal performance. However, with plans of upgrading the building envelope down the road and a need for cooling there was a logical option to consider a heat pump.

So why not both? This dual fuel system uses a heat pump for the first stages of heating and cooling, and when additional capacity is required for heating in the colder temperature ranges, the gas furnace will take over - all done in a simple and automated control system from one thermostat. The biggest advantage is that as the insulation and windows are upgraded over the years, the system will use less and less fossil fuels and the high efficiency heat pump will take over.

What’s the deal with these wall hung boilers??

Direct vent technology has become the new standard for high efficiency gas fired equipment often reaching afu efficiencies above 95%, but that’s not the only thing that makes our Navien boilers special. Modulating boilers are able to adjust their output capacity which reduces short cycling even in shoulder seasons for better efficiency and longer lifespans of the system.

Pioneer Energy Solutions utilizes ECM circulator pumps to reduce electrical energy consumption and outdoor temperature sensors to optimize boiler water temperatures for ideal comfort and efficiency. We were recently called out to repair an existing minisplit system in Oneonta NY. The initial problem was that the system had failed and we were able to verify the compressor needed replacement. However, we also identified a number of major and minor violations of local codes and manufacturer specifications from the original installation. After weighing options with the system owner we proceeded with the repairs as well as modifications to the installation that would bring the system back into compliance with the manufacturer specifications and local codes:
-Replace outdoor unit
-Replace indoor unit with appropriate model to match the outdoor unit
-Extend the refrigeration lines to manufacturer minimum length and replace with new insulated lines
-Reposition outdoor unit away from LP tank
-Replace panel electrical breakers with proper size and type
-Add outdoor disconnects with surge protectors
-Upgrade wire size to meet system spec and electrical codes

We also followed best practices for the system start up to ensure the system was free of potential refrigeration leaks and would be properly charged for a long lasting, reliable, efficient life cycle.
